Evening peeps,
What can you guys tell me about steering boxes? After looking underneath the disco at another job it looked as though the steering box is leaking. Can I replace the seals on this myself or is it better to buy new or 2nd hand?

I have literally just finished putting in a new one. Depending on how bad the leaks are may be worth getting a new one (although not cheap  )

Cheers guys. The leaks aren't too bad yet so may even try erplacing the seals as mentioned. Out of curiosity how much was the replacement?

Did one on the RRC recently was around $900 fitted :( Did research and most said go new as replacing seals is temporary at best). Still don't know if it was right decision, but at least it doesn't leak!

I just pulled mine out of my D1 to stop the leak.
Busted a ball joint puller - $30.
Got the magic puzzle apart (one day I will read the instructions).
Then the needles bearings started falling out.
the end of the bearing race was mixed with ATF into a nice silver paste and had pitted the sector shaft.
My question is, can I fit new needle bearings?
(the book says no). But I say "hey for $20 bucks its worth a try".
Anyone done it before?
Dave.

I fitted new needle bearings, got them on Amazon.com for about $60 for the pair in under a week.
However, after reassembly it leaked like there wasn't a seal in there. I rebuilt from the book with a mate double checking, so think it is all down to condition of shaft, any damage and you need to look at refacing in someway I reckon,
