Hi all,

Since moving to Tassie, I have created an online business which caters for those of us who like to make or modify our own outdoor gear. Whether it be making hammocks, tents, lightweight tarps, top quilts, under quilts or modifying your sea kayak, we are slowly building up our products to make it easier for people to source this stuff locally.

Be careful though once you start down this path it can be quite addictive and for the guys - soon you may find yourself being busted by your wife browsing the internet looking at pictures of other people's sewing machines, or to use the correct masculine term, thread injectors :D.

Our website is Tier Gear home page (http://www.tiergear.com.au) and our Facebook page is https://www.facebook.com/TierGear.

Thanks all.

A bit of an update. Among other things we are now supplying lightweight hiking stoves (http://www.tiergear.com.au/11/diy-supplies-other-gear/6-Stoves/) including a lightweight titanium wood stove by TATO Gear. The lightest stove the AB-13 Hybrid only weighs 16 grams :).

I have also branched into making some gear, and if anyone wants a hammock made up I am happy to talk with you about it. I can also make a separate bug net made from Noseeum mesh, the version I make is commonly known as a Fronkey Net named after the guy who designed it. Fronkey has given me the nod to make them commercially available here in Oz.

Of if anyone is keen to try their hand at making their own hammock, I am happy to help whether you get stuff from me or not. Making a hammock is quite a simple process.

I know mate you should try having it all this stuff close to where you sleep :).

Let me know if you have any questions about any of it.

I have more stoves on the way too, as I sold out of the Hybrid Max.

He's certainly not for everyone. Personally I like him, a very generous man with sharing info.

He takes that hammock down to some cold temps too. -40F this year which is fairly cold.

Mole Creek is a lovely area. Business is picking up.

Thanks Mick. I had a chance to try out the MAX stove on a walk into the Walls Of Jerusalem and I was pretty impressed by it. It is starting to get some good reviews. It benefits from a good windscreen though.

We are now stocking Wilderness Logics top quilts (http://www.tiergear.com.au/11/diy-supplies-other-gear/123-Wilderness-Logics-Winter-Top-Quilts/). These are primarily designed for hammock use but can obviously be used on the ground depending on your needs, and would certainly be of good use in a swag.

For those that are not familiar with top quilts they are like a sleeping bag without the zipper, and with enough fabric to tuck under you. Once you compress goose down it's insulating properties are drastically reduced and just add extra weight - hence the top quilt design.

A top quilt is much easier to get in than a sleeping bag especially in a hammock or swag as you just put you feet in the footbox and drape the rest over you. No fiddling with zippers, or doing the sleeping bag wriggle.

These top quilts are rated to around -9degC, are stuffed with 850fp Canadian goose down, come with a sewn in footbox and use 1.1oz ripstop nylon as the shell fabric. The weight of the King size (140 x 200cm) is 710grams.

Unfortunately I only have them in limited numbers but will be stocking more in the future.
