Coil springs for a Defender

Hello All,

This is my first post so please go easy on me.

I have a 2001 model Defender 110 TD5 fitted with a bull bar and winch. The front springs seemed to be sagging so I purchased a pair of Pedders 7718 coils. These are meant to give about a 30mm lift but the sales person was understandably not too specific as there are a few factures he couldn't predict. However I just fitted them and it made about 80mm difference. Now the truck has a slight 'up-hill' appearance, not the look I was after. My questions are;

Does anyone have any experience with these particular springs? do they settle after a few weeks/months and drop a bit?

Has anyone had problems with the standard shocks being pulled-out or damaged by excessive spring travel? I understand the shock is expected to act as a stopper and prevent the spring from being displaced from the mounts, but there must be a limit to how much pull they can handle.

The new coils are also different to the old in that the last turn of the coil is not bevelled to give a nice full circle of contact to the spring bases. Its the full wire width except for the last inch or so, which would concentrate the load on just one area of the base plate. Does this cause a problem?

Just for reference, does anyone know what the standard vehicle ride height is, maybe the distance from axle to bumpstop rubber unladened? mine is about 130mm now and was about 50mm with the old sagged original springs.

Lastly has anyone fitted 285/75/16 tyres on 7 x 16 rims, in particular the Xtreme alloys?

Davo, I would get them to check they gave you Defender springs. I wolud not have thought they would be standard Pedders line but could be wrong.

I have 285/75/16 Goodyear MTR's on an Xtreme but these are fitted to offset Disco rims. I have had to cable tie the bottom of the front flares to the side rails to stop the tyres picking up the flares on arcticulation otherwise they fit fine. Have not tried them on the factory alloys though. The 285 should be fitted to 8" rims and you may not be able to get them fitted to the factory alloys.

most likly the wrong coils.

All rover springs should be ground fpr a full contact fit.

They are most likly nissan springs.

TYake them back make them fit the correct items.

I recently asked about tyres at a shop. They looked up their little books and advised 235.85 are the largest tyres that can be legally fitted to Xtreme alloys.

If you want to fit the tires ditch the alloys and buy a set of sunraiser steel 16x8. they are only 170 each as opposed to over 700 for landie rims and they have an offset. i have 235x85 on 16x7 and they ub on the inside. get the sunraiser which are offset and you should be able to fit the tires easily.

Pro Comp in Melbourne have 16 x 8 rims with the appropriate offset for $145 at the moment. These come out of the US and are very well made.

I fitted 31.5x10.5x15 goodyear wrangler mtr's to a set of 15x7 sunrasia's. the tyres were $225 and th rims a $100 bucks a pop. awesome combo and they look mean too. no problems about clearance.
