Blown head gasket? L322 fails.

Well 1 month into my L322 ownership I have a blown head gasket.
From what I have learned this is a rare occurrence with the V8???
3 days ago I got the dreaded "Low coolant" bing bong from the dash:eek:
Pulled over at soonest opportunity, temp gauge hadnt shifted at all, there seemed to be plenty of coolant still in the exp tank when I bled the pressure off, topped her up and started up..........bubbles and belching of air which increased with revving of the engine.
Luckily I have a warranty on the damn thing, took it back to the yard that I bought it from...FEW what a relief, no dramas at all the dude says we will have it back to you in 3-4 days.

Luckily I know the mechanic that will be doing the repairs so I can keep pretty good tabs on whats going on.
Well the trusty P38 has been resurrected and is busy doing what it does best, Im so glad somebody didnt buy it!

And I dont want to hear from all you guys with Tractor engines in your RANGE ROVERS telling me I should have bought a diesel............

Not trying to be rude, BUT are you sure it's a head gasket ?

Failed/ faulty thermostat or the PCV hoses leaking can appear like a HG failure. ;)

Watery oil is very common example caused by a leaking PCV system, which will also cause miss-fires and codes that a dealer will say is HG failure. These engines only usually blow head gaskets after being severely overheated to the extent that other internal damage is done also. :censored:

I can remember a mate about 20 years ago that had a 351 V8 engined TRACTOR ! He did it as a dare, when his Massey diesel got tired after about 20,000 hrs and he had a rusty Fairlane---
So I ask, V8 petrol TRACTOR engines?

Me? I've an early L322 TD6---- tractor engine? maybe ? with twin OHC, 4 valves/cyl, variable vane turbo, 4800RPM.
Very sweet engine.

I am open to all suggestions.
It sounds like you may be correct with your heads up call.
Had a call from the stealer saying that the mechanic had found a "faulty sensor and a few leaking seals" ?? The stealer is not mechanically literate at all, the mechanic working on it comes very highly recommended by a friend with years of Landy experience........so Im quietly confident that all is well, or will be.

Well Im back on the road.
Picked the RR up and, all is well........
A sensor was changed and some seal was leaking, in car yard salesman speak.
Coolant is now Blue colour instead of green.
Looks like the PCV hose was changed and the sensor at the thermostat, looks to have a new expansion filler cap as well.
Its idling just a little higher as well, me thinks.
Going fine, I have run around in manual mode for a while at 3-4000 RPM, no over flow issue....but its fairly cool and raining in Sydney town.
No oil in water and no water in oil.
Its a bit of a worry when, a sensor goes? and a vacuum hose fails? and an apparently fine (mechanically) engine looses its coolant.

Score card;
P38 1, L322 with TD6 0.5, L322 with V8 0.

Hey, mine doesn't sound like a tractor at all. More like a school bus.
