I've just given my SIII SWB a new paint job.
As he's my toy and a bit of a basher, its only a quick rattlecan job, but with more mods to come, it'll make it easier to touch up :)

Well my plans have changed..... M.U.D. was getting a quick patch up to get him back on the road so I could move to Cairns. Not getting married anymore means no move, which in turn means more money and time for my baby. Time for a proper restro :)

Now the bigger question, powerplant? If I'm going to pull him down i might as well build him back up properly, the 186 needs an extreme makeover and 2nd gear is on the way out lol maybe time for a change

If you've got a bit of money to spend get a Ford 4.0L and 4 speed auto from an EL or AU (they're all the same motor) and series t/case and you'd end up with a ripper of a shorty with power like you wouldn't believe in a Series. You then get cheap parts and probably better fuel economy and no carbies to stuff around with. Or if you really wish to keep the 186 give it a full rebuild and maybe a few mods like decent exhaust, better carby and maybe a new cam.

I'm not really a holden fan, so the chances the 186 staying are low.
If I stick with a 6cyl petrol, the ford motor has the best chance.
There's also a good chance I'll convert the beast to diesel.

Well I've decided, since MUD will become not only a Patrol/Cruiser recovery vechile, it will also serve as my Zombie Apocalypse Vechile. Hence I'll be most likely swapping the holden 186 for a diesel. Any suggestions on a descent bullet proof 4 or 6cyl diesel and 5 spd combo for my '88 ?

throw a 300 tdi in or a td5 would be a good engine in that, should be some smashed disco 2's around or even a wrecked short wheel base defender to get and swap the engine, etc out of.

Yeah atm I'm torn between either a 300tdi or an isuzu motor and gearbox

Well I'm seriously looking going auto if I can as ive developed knee problems... especially my left knee.
Anybody know of a good diesel motor auto box combo that'll fit in my series 3 swb?

Awhile ago I was thinking about a custom dash for M.U.D. and I sort of gave up on the idea until seeing this in a gumtree add....

So I looked around and found something I liked a little better.....

How hard would it be to get something like that passed in QLD?

im pretty sure a custom fabricated dash would be fine. as long as it has all the turn signals and standard dials on it. although queensland does have some stupid rules. loads of commodores in perth getting around with custom dash's with no problems what so ever.

Well the wooden dash in Qld (an unfinished project) and the metal dash is overseas..... but yeah I've heard Qld has some stupid rules

A custom dash in QLD must follow the same lines as the original dash, so that means a custom bulkhead probably wouldn't pass. But if you can find an engineer who will sign off on it then it would be OK. As for the engine, I decided to keep my 186 as they are very common, you can get parts for them everywhere and once you change the carby (I put on a 34ADM webber) and a set of extractors you find they have plenty of power. If you keep the engine cool then it will outlast the series chassis.
