My 94 Disco has over 230,000 Km on the clock and I noticed while the auto tranny was out to be rebuilt, the engine dripped some coolant out of the left hand manifold. As a temp fix I put in an additive to stop the leak which appears to have fixed it BUT now I'm a bit parinoid to go and play.

so my questions are:

As the 3.9 is a little underpowered any way, has any one used the bits off of it to build up a 4.6 short motor or would it be better to go for a 4.6 long motor and be done with it.

Or would I be better off going for a holden gen III motor as they are cheaper and have cheaper parts?

or just fix the 3.9 if the rest of the drive train cant handle the extra power?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

Cheers

g'day blitz, i think you just answered your own question, the fact that youve already clocked up 230,000 k's and had the tranny rebuilt (probably to standard specs')putting in a more powerful motor mite just be putting too much strain on the rest of the driveline, and unless it is a straight change over( no adaptors and modifications)can sometimes be more trouble than its worth!!I mean i would love to shoehorn a 351 cleveland into my series 2a and have seen it done ,but toooooo much stuffarsin about with all the mods as you go from bumper to bumper , but thats just my 2 cents worth

I know what you mean I put a Holden HR L2 186 motor into my SWB 2A years ago, broke axles like they were going out of fashion, so I grafted in a set front and rear salsbury diffs from a SIII. Not a job to be taken lightly as everything is different. Then used to break gearboxes, but I did learn alot about the word finese, and the use of my right foot.

All the drive line bits on the disco have been rebuilt as unfortunately the car looked better physically than she was under the skin (read ripped off)

I may have to go cap in hand to mr land Rover and ask if they used heavier duty diffs etc with the bigger engines

Cheers

Blitz, gday. Depends on what you want the car to do. If it's a daily driver, keep it close to standard. 3.9 or 4.6 will be OK.

What a bit more from 3.9? Matchport the heads, find some high comp pistons (9.35:1), chip the ECU, headers and bigbore exhaust, etc.....

Check out the RPI Engineering and Rimmer Bros websites. Have fun!

hi i am real sorry to sound like a preacher but when a vehicle like a land rover or any other 4wheel drive has done a lot of klm on the dial it is not a good buy if you want to do hard four wheel driveing.
4x4 are no diferent to holden or fords they breakdown more often when they are old or young and have done a lot of klm. I run a 40 + vehicle fleet RMS and we turn the vehicle over every 2 years.( dont tell any body ) about so they will buy my old vehicle.

Just remember if you put in an engine not designed for the vehicle (a non LR engine) it will effect your insurance. For example, I have only found 2 insurance agencies that will insure me because I have a holden engine, and If I insure it, and don't tell them, they won't pay up

Blitz

Got rid of my 3.9 v8 (94 series 1 auto) and replaced it with a low km
td5 (5ks) the insurance company would not let me fit any other motors
other than what are fitted to disco's.

Interesting seashells,,,

how much for the Td5?

For what it's worth I replaced the 3.5 with a new 4.6 lower end and rebuilt the top with 3.9 EFI, heads and stage 2 cam. The EFI uses GM 5 litre injectors as the originals would have been working close to their capacity after installing a Wolf 3D EMS.
The extra power (never have to flatten it when off roading) has not affected the ZF Auto and we have done over 100K.
It was certainly well worth it.
Just another hoplessly overcapitalised Rangie!

So RichardK,, is it insured,,
and if so,,
what as ????

so the 3.9 heads just bolt straight on???

RichardK

Yes it is insured as a 4.6, and has been through two insurance companies and been declared both times, once through TCIS when we were in a club and the other current.
The heads bolt straight on

Hi Richard,

As a matter of interest, what kind of fuel consumption are you experiencing with the 4.6 Block.

just another engine to consider, Leyland P76 4.4 Litre. Same engine as LR except for deck hieght. Heads interchange so can take injection or carby setup. Parts are still available. Think about it.
