Sorry another TD5 Clutch thread.

Going round in circles trying to decide what clutch, or rather flywheel to fit. I do like the idea of a solid flywheel rather than a dual mass but my dual mass hasn't done too bad for 160K but it's had a fairly easy life until now.
Can anyone who has gone down the solid flywheel conversion give some feedback.
Would you do it again, any regrets?
I've heard of a rattle at idle with foot of the clutch from the clutch springs, is there any other side effects, i.e more noise at highway speeds, stiffer pedal etc.

Any feedback would be appreciated. The reason I'm looking at solid is because the car now tows a lot more and I like tackling the more extreme tracks :D

I have the Rakeway solid flywheel and AP racing clutch that they provide.

I put mine in because I could east clutch plates in 20k miles when towing HEAVY stock trailers with an uprated remap.

Would I do it again?

Definately.

There is a slight rattle at tickover but as soon as you depress the clutch it goes away.

The clutch bite isn't really to do with the flywheel per-se, it's more to do with the springs and friction plate. What I can say is that the Rakeway solution works / feels exactly like the original units but can handle a whole lot more torque.

It's not a cheap solution, but definitely worth it if you tow a lot.

I think I got option2+ as my car is heavy, tows a lot and has a strong remap on it.

I have basically the same setup as Jon above.

totally agree with his overview.

Rakeway are awesome to deal with. However, ring them for a shipping quote. they are slow on emails.

I have just done the flywheel in my D2 TD5. Looked into getting rid of dual mass and going solid. Rang TRS and the guy almost yelled at me saying don’t do it, they have fitted a few and everyone had been removed due to how rattly they were. He said they were designed and built in Australia and as far as he was concerned should be taken off the market. This made me do a bit more research and I found that they can be OK, but make sure you research which brand you get. They have to be well designed, sounds like the local ones are too light and do not dampen enough ( solid needs to be heavier than the DM to be effective). Sorry I have no brand names to avoid, but you will probably have to get it from overseas.

It's cost that makes me look at the UK, not come to a conclusion yet, Rakeway may well be out of my price at the minute, may have to live with it for a couple of months yet :(

As a rough guide shipping on the two I have had out of the UK has been just over 250pounds each.
