Hey all,

Does anyone know if the S1 brake drums are the same as say, a 2/2A vehicle?
I need some new ones, the later items are plentiful.

Cheers

As far as I know they are the same as Series 2/2a, but not S3 or very late 2a, which have larger diameter studs. Note you need to get the right size 10" or 12", and not the six cylinder ones.

88"s have 10 inch drum single-leading shoe (single wheel cylinder at the top) brakes all round.

109's (after 1955) have 11 inch twin leading shoe (two cylinders per wheel, top and bottom) drums at the front (four-cylinder cars are 2.5 inch wide, sixes - 1967 on - are 3 inch) and all rears are 11 inch x 2.5inch single leading shoe drums.

As mentioned earlier, drums received larger wheel studs very late in S2A production, and sometime in Series 3 ended up with only on retaining screw.

Everything is interchangeable, though.

The drums on the series 1 x 11" (the ones that did have them IIRC some 107 did have 10") are the same however the rear cylinders, shoes and backing plates are different. (They are the same as early SII 109" but not SIIa 109)

The rear have a single bottom adjuster and a floating cylinder so if you have a problem with the rears you may find parts are hard to acquire. It is sometimes easier to retrofit the rear 11" mechanism to the later type.
