I've been trying to get the serpentine belt off so I can replace the dodgy vacuum pump on my MY07 90. Wife came out to help but her suggestions to take it to a land rover agent resulted in a night on the couch for me after my pointed feedback...
Not dissuaded I came up with a plan. I removed the radiator fan cover (but you don't really need to even do that). Slid under the truck with a good size crescent that had some string tied to it and ensured that was set firmly on so I didn't need to hold it in place. The string looped back down over the right side chassis/wheel area then ended with a loop stretch towards the left front wheel. Through the front wheel I secured a cargo ratchet and with the hook of the tie-down passed that through the loop of string connected to the ratchet. Then as I worked the ratchet it pulled the crescent and in turn slowly took the tension off the belt and held it off so I just had to stand up lift the belt off.
The vacuum pump gasket looked a little worse for wear so replaced with new pump and gasket (off EBay for NZD142 to door instead of stealer at nearly NZD600).
Diplomatic relations have been restored with the wife (how do I tell her I have a better night's sleep on the couch....sorry, wrong forum!):

PS I'm sure somebody has already thought of doing it this way.
