power steering leak

hello folks I have a power steering leak in the steering box I have done the bottom seal kit but it is still leaking when parked on an incline I think it must be coming from a seal or something at the top or back of the box any ideas and how hard to repair thanks wayne

I had the same problem mate, me and everyone else I think? I opted to get a new box, I've heard that kits are hit & miss. I believe that there is also another seal and thats the main culprit? There are others on here who know so much better than me, but looks like they are having an early night :)

The input shaft seal was the culprit in my rangie. I done this with the box still in the car.....fiddly but doable. I made a long tube seal installer which makes seating the seal square with the input shaft in the road a bit easier.

Tho its not a big job to remove the box, and its easier to do on the bench.

Here's a fix you might not believe but is worth a try and it will work and you've got nothing to lose.

Put 40-50ml of brake fluid in the power steer reservoir. It lubricates and brings the seals back to life. The leak will take up and stays good for 12 months or so. If it starts to leak again, top up with ATF then do it again.

I have a 96 D1 that is coming up to 440k and I have done this for years, when it gets a bit weapy I hit it again. Replaced the bottom seal once but didn't make much difference. I just stick with the brake fluid trick. Works a treat.

I have something similar happening, it's using oil but doesn't seem to be leaking onto ground. I've topped it up a couple of times with Morey's/Lucas oil, it's nice & thick & sticky, but even after I've just done it, the level goes down without even starting it??????????????:confused:

Wouldnt that cause aeration of the atf and eventual failure of seals due to chemical damage?
