Suspension Bushes - Replacing

Okay so I'm cheap. Canned the idea of new suspension on the Series III and decided to try replacing the bushes first.

The bloke I them from show me how to insert them in the spring (2 piece yellow plasticy things) but they wont go in all the way... Yes I left the metal centre bit in, that was how he showed me to do it.

I've tried compressing them with a treaded rod and washers/nuts at each end but they don't seem to what to go any further or come out of course :oops: if they would I'd remove the metal centre and try to knock that through after wards....

Does anyone have any suggestions for me? All hep appreciated!

Awoke this morning with the solution. Made a bush pulling tool on a smaller scale and removed the metal centre. Then used the normail sized one to compress 2 'plastic' halves together, lastly used it again to pull the metal centre bit back in.

It you ever need to make these tools let me know and I'll send a photo of them or if your localish you can borrow them!

There is a tool called a "bushwacker" (funly enough..) that is designed especially for the purpose of removeing the old bush and adding the new bush in one strike.....
Good luck trying to find one..... all of us here in Bundy are still looking for the damn thing.
Last sighted in England somewhere....

I'm going to be doing my replacement shortly on the Series III. Sometimes you've just got to cut the rubber seal away and strike the steel tube with the right size socket.... I'll let you know how it all goes.

I read about the bushwacker and wanted one but with money and 10000 miles in the way I went for the cheaper option.

Good luck with the steel tube mine were so entrenched I ended up hack sawing them out, (not a bad option if you thread the saw through the bush :oops: :oops: before you get to the last one).

Thanks mate - yeah I've got a friend here in Bundy who has done a set on his landy and seemed to work no worries....
I'll be making notes of anything that I find to be overly difficult or exceptionally easy - so I can post them on here for reference.

Speaking of bushes, how often should u replace them ? If your car has done 90% of it's life on road ?

Have a mate here in Bundy that was told that the Polyurothane bushes were the way to go in mud, sand etc etc, but he found dramas with them, and made the comment to me the other day about the genuine landrover bushes which he fitted to his and are still currently in position.... which I like to call "Set and forget" parts.

The moral of the story is that the life of the part depends on how well you look after it.... look after your gear and it will live longer than you most likely style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif
