It chews the fuel at 40L per 100kms. New spark plugs leads dizzy cap and button new vacuum lines stepper motor working 28 psi at fuel rail any advice will be greatly appreciated.

So your getting about 200km per tank?

Advance the ignition timing to 10 degrees BTDC
Check the value of the ECU temp sender when hot, should be around 300 ohms. Plug looks like an injector plug just behind the thermostat housing.
Check the fuel pressure regulator isn't leaking fuel into the manifold via its vacuum hose.
Clean or replace your MAF with a known good one.

Hi bee utet
Haven't checked timing as yet, I'm going to check temp sender in the morning, fuel pressure regular is working ant not leaking same with the MAF sensor any other suggestions ?

Check the vacuum advance, pull the vac hose off the intake manifold and suck on line. If you can suck air through the line the vac advance unit will need to be replaced, this is bolted to the side of the distributor.
Also the temp sender will cause the same problem.

It sounds like you have my old Nissan Patrol engine under your bonnet. I was getting figures like that so i bought my new Defender to replace it.

checked the brakes they are fine, the coolant temperature sensor was 320ohms at running temperature, is that normal? Any other suggestions would be highly appreciated as it is doing my head in

Sounds like a 1/4 inch hole drilled in the bottom of your fuel tank! Someone is not out to get you??!! Does it run rough and have a distinct amount of black smoke out the exhaust when you start it or step on the throttle? Sounds like a O2 sensor or something is sending max fuel somewhere it shouldn't. I think Bee Utey is on the trail about your timing and how the engine runs. Tell more about if it is rough at idle or low on power. Does it take a long time to warm up (operating temp)? When was the last new air cleaner given to it? There is not a miner bird nest in the intake piping?? Or a carpet snake? It might help if nothing obvious comes up to get those injectors checked. Maybe have a look at the new bosch gen 3 injectors which go well in the 4.6. They actually atomise the fuel instead of squirt the piston like a water pistol (gems injectors) :(.
This guy does a bunch of videos on the bosch type 3 injector compared to the lucas types. Have a look. comparison of Lucas type disc injector to Bosch design III to the stock GM multec. - YouTube

Hi Brian
It does blow black smoke when I put my foot down and the exhaust fumes smell like petrol but seems to idle ok and run ok. It is a bit sluggish but I'm assuming that is because of its weight

john - going from memory, if stationary and in neutral/park you give the engine a quick rev and if there is a hesitation till the revs start it tells you the engine is in limp mode so some electronic parameters are outside of the expected range.
i remember checking something similar with mine years ago. turn engine off and wait a few seconds, you will hear a click which takes things back to default. start up engine and try revving again see if hesitation there.
people often say disconnect the MAF and drive and see if that makes a difference.
leaking injectors? if they are leaking, got a set for mine from US off ebay for round $120 landed few years ago. read of a few people on here doing this.
keep digging away, as it's so bad you're sure to find it!

Hi Brian

This is mine exactly, also very BLACK exhaust end, but mine is also occasionally hard to start 1st up, I have to hold my throttle down to the floor & wind it over till it starts.
I have put another MAF on it & use MAF cleaner spray every month or so, it has a new air-cleaner & has the timing retarded. Thankfully my fuel usage isn't as bad as that, I get around 400-420k's on the h/way & lot less around town. Towing is something else altogether :censored: :wasntme:
