Need to have some "HOW TO" post's/sections on here LOL
If anyone could, could they please give me some simple instruction on how to remove & replace coils on a D1? & if there are any specific "don'ts" that would be appreciated.
Thanks :D

I have just done that on mine, it's not hard but I found it difficult as I had no one to help me. I think it would have been a lot easier with 2 people.
In principal:
MAKE SURE VEHICLE IS STABLE ON STANDS.
Rear.
Loosen wheel nuts.
Jack up vehicle and chock up on frame. You need to get it quite high to give the coils enough room to open up.
Undo one end of shockers.
Garage Jack under diff
Remove wheels
Allow axle to lower enough with jack to remove coils
Undo bolts holding coils
Pull out coils, only works if chassis high enough and axle low enough.
Retain ends on old coils and place on new ones.
Refit new coils
Put all back together.
It may help to undo sway bar, lowers axle a little more or even smaller jack between axle and body to spread further.
MAKE SURE VEHICLE IS STABLE ON STANDS
Front.
Very similar to rear as far as jacks, stands go.
Undo bolts as required on coils and shockers. Shockers can remain attached by top.
Remove coils from underneath pull out and down
Same trick with sway bar and jack if needed
Replace and refit.
Take care with brake cables
That is what I did. I also replaced shockers. Took me about 5 hours. I am sure the purists will jump up and down and say it's all wrong however it worked for me.
YOU WILL NEED A WHEEL ALIGNMENT ON COMPLETION.
I waited for a week to let it all settle.
100% improvement for me.

Thanks, that's pretty well how I did it on my old GQ, put a jack between the axle & body at one stage to get a bigger gap for the raised coil, but there where two of us that time & just me this time.
Any hassle's getting the coil out of it's "seat"? :D

put a couple of bags of cement on a blanket in the tray or on the body work on the corner you are about to work on.
this closes up the spring.
Rope the coil tight (I usually use 2 pieces of telstra rope with 3 turns)
then remove the weight and jack up the body.
then jack the axle downwards
naturally you have to undo the top shock mount first , then you wedege the compressed coil upwards to get in to hold the shocky so you can undo the bottom nut.
putting the new ones in is a bit more entertaining.

Further to my efforts above, I was lavish with the inox on the nuts and bolts for a couple of days beforehand to make removal easier. As per Blknights sandbag suggestion (good idea I wish I had thought of it) I borrowed some coil compressors do do the same thing. They were very iffy and a bit lightweight but did the job just enough to help. If I thought I was going to do it again, I might invest in some heavy duty ones.

Would putting opposite corner (front for back, back for front same side) on a ramp help at all?? ;)

I have no idea sorry, I did a complete axle at a time. Someone smarter than me can probably answer you.

Ok, bit of a question here - the coils have numbers & letters on them - front being LAN-106E NS, the other LAN-106E DS. One is slightly longer than the other (only just) & that's the DS one, so am supposing DS stands for drivers side, is this correct????????????
Thanks

I eventually googled it, not that easy let me tell you LOL, & eventually found a reference to it in an Ironman page.
Thanks guys, why don't they just call NS passenger side i.e. PS, it would be less confusing LOL

Well had to start with hard ones first (front) didn't I LOL & by myself. Took a couple of hours just for the 1st one but learnt from it so other front one shouldn't be as long, finishing the other 3 today.
Only reason it's taking so long is I have what is called "frozen shoulder" & bursitis in left shoulder which makes working under a car a tad painful

Well had to bite the bullet & go for a walk to Handy Hire & hire some spring compressors, lucky it was only about 1.5K's return :o.
I put the coils in (only 2 so far LOL) with the writing on them the right way up but I think that might be wrong as the closer rings/coils are at the bottom & the wider spaced ones at the top. Anyone know about this???????? This made it a tad hard putting the coil holder bar on :censored:

When I did mine, (king springs) gathered or closer coils needed to go to top on Rear springs only. Front springs didn't have gathered coils.

Before I put them in I didn't really notice a difference but but when some weight was put on them it really showed. Looking at the other rear one I can now see it but only just, not like some I've seen. :(
What's the reasoning for this & will it make a difference, anybody know??

The king springs instructions say to fit them to the top "where possible" so maybe it doesn't make much of a difference???

Yeah thought so but was just wondering about the ride, thinking it might be a bit "harsher", ah well they're in now & that's how they're going stay, for now anyway LOL.

The closed coils go to the top as when fitted to the bottom retain water an dirt (mud) promoting rust. Apart from that it doesn't really matter

Phew, finally finished it & won't be doing again by myself :censored:, the front umm buggers were a pain in the but. Made a huge difference though, in ride & height but only done round the block yet to see if there where any clunks or clangs. Will see how she goes tomorrow :D

Just a bit of a side issue here......when I put the wheels back on I was going to check wheel & shocky nuts after a couple of days. Anyway went for a spin with the club, everything ok, then went down to Brissy & daughter was using me as her personal taxi service  , so about 400k's at this time. When driving into mother in-laws (staying there) on day I noticed a slight noise when going at walking pace (one drive-way for about 40 odd town house type acc) so got oldest boy to drive it back & forwards & sure enough 1 (only 1) set of wheel nuts where coming a bit loose. :o
So moto IS, after a removing any tyres ALWAYS check wheel nuts again after a couple of hundred k's

Hi Steelo
Do you remember what the part number was for your rear springs?
Do you know the specifications for the front and rear springs? eg 220lb
I have a set of lan106e front and lan113hd rear, but I can't find any spec on them. They have no paint splashes on them to ID them.
The front are about 15.5in with 9 coils and the rear are 16.5in with 9.5 coils.
If anyone can help I would appreciate it.
Neale
