Hi everyone,
We are going to leave in a month or two. I have postponed it but with a heavy heart I started listing Hebe for sale on several sites (see Aulro marketplace (http://www.aulro.com/afvb/vehicles-sale/187325-land-rover-series-1-swb-1958-soft-top-7-seater-road-fully-registered.html)). Today I took my daughter to the beach to say our final farewells and make a few last photos. I of course dressed up for the occaision and I must say that Hebe's colour really comes out well on the beach.
I am still job hunting for a position in the UK but hope to find something that will keep me coming back now and then for work. Being an Aussie now myself I am sure to come back. Whoever buys Hebe, better take good care of her.
Does anyone have any recomendations on where to put for sale ads? Which websites or...???

I'd hate to be you right now where the car is concerned. It must be gut wrenching to have to see her go. :( She is one hell of an example of a vehicle.
What beach did you take that pic at?

Please don't take it to the UK... The salted roads will kill it! Yes, it might fetch more but we want to keep it here! Its stunning! I wish you all the best for your Europe move, and the sale of a stunning vehicle! :)

I did consider shipping. But I am going without a job, unless I find one soon. We will also need the money. It's eating me up and I have been putting it off for a long time. However, I did do what I wanted. Drove the kids with cancer at the Christmas party around, made a few nice photos, visited friends on Mornington... maybe I will take it for a final camping trip... but I am now OK to let go... IF I find someone who cares and doesn't it let go to waste. It looks great, but more can be done to get it fully original or optimum (said the perfectionist).
Have a look at this one
1951 Land Rover Rover Series I (http://www.carsales.com.au/dealer/details/Land-Rover-Rover-1951/AGC-AD-14946842/?Cr=0&sdmvc=1)
Wow, I didn't have the patience to go better than new. Nor the funds.
Chops, Mordialloc beach at the sailing club. Sailing club gave me permission to rescue one of their boats (ahem) because otherwise it is illegal to drive on the beach. By the way, I just went 3 meters or so on it for the photos and totally forgot to rescue that sailing boat. I wonder if it drowned?
Anyway, good memories. But time to move on. And once in the UK...... shsst don't tell my wife.

Hi
Had a look at the 51 for sale
It is only 1/2 a Landy
like other rebuilds, only half finished
were are the door tops, windows, bows, tilt, hard top, ute top etc etc
its only bits of this and that, like a few I saw at Cooma in 68.
when you rebuild a car finish it
my first 58 rebuild finished up with a tilt, tropical waggon full roof etc, and a ute cab, can drive it in 4 different variants.
My 49 comes with a tilt and truck cab.
It takes a rebuilder to do the lot
cheers

You're probably right Ian. But didn't I see in one of the photos the hood sticks and doors. Still, a terrific job to get it back to better than factory. But that is from what I see on the photos. And my photos are pretty nice as well and I admit that it brings out the best while there is probably still some stuff left to do (although little).

Day 2 of Hebe being listed on a number of websites.
Pffft can you believe it.... Someone in the UK is seriously considering shipping it over. I couldn't bear to do that... imagine I see it driving past while there. Of course I will help, but I rather find a buyer here.
I had one serious buyer the other day. In the end he preferred to spent 10,000$ on a car in NSW which conveniently doesn't show the engine, chassis etc. One owner and original paint in reasonably straight body and why that one above mine?... because Hebe didn't have the galvanised trimmings as original which was painted over.

All this stuff is optional.
"were are the door tops, windows, bows, tilt, hard top, ute top etc et'
So dont really have to be a part of a good restoration but good on you Ian for getting them all together.:)
Hebe looks really good, hope you get what you want.

Hi
looks as if I need a new pair of glasses
or learn to read every thing, looked at several of the photos not the 20 odd.
well perhaps I should push the correct buttons in future.
You need to take Hebe with you, if you can't put him some where until you can
I think I be rather sick if I saw one of mine driving around UK
In the early 2000's I sold my first Series one, and found out later she was sent to the USA for a lot more than I received.
cheers

Had a look at that site with the 1951 80" for sale and the 2nd last photo shows hood sticks door tops, windscreen and a neatly folded soft top.
Still $27,000 for a vehicle that's not 100% correct (noticed a few oddities like incorrect park lights, Pre cleaner, battery, horn dip switch any many more that arnt correct!

I do wish you all the best with selling your vehicle but for the Aussie market price is just to high & that its near Christmas time does help much either.
Last year I sold my fully restored 1958 88" and could only get $5900 for it and that also included full hard top, truck cab and soft top frame with 12 months rego too :(
Oddly if it was an early 80" Iam sure you Landy would have sold long ago as there highly desirable.
Note not having a go, just being realistic.
I restored my very first series 1 in 1993 I have owned at least 20+ series 1s since.

Hi Lost Landy,
I do hear that from some. On the other hand others tell me not to worry and that with a bit of patience that buyer will show up as the car is worth it. Any potential buyer out there listening? I am willing to negotiate.
However, I will also be patient. Even if we have already left I will keep it listed until one day... (meanwhile I will let my friends drive and store it)
IS IT WORTH THIS AMOUNT OF MONEY?
In short, YES!. It is a 55 year old classic and I see prices only go up for restored and actually driving ones. I bought the car myself for less, but I got more in receipts than the amount I am asking for. Don't forget I will donate 10% to a good cause. And have a look at these competitors:
COMPETITOR 1
What can I say about this one!? If you have the cash, go for it. It's been well cared for as I can see. Restoration work, or maintenance, is faithful and good. Aparently it has been driven daily and it's on the road. No pictures of the engine though. Yes, it's worth the money but check it out first. Sorry, but you never know with anyone else but me.

Another example of a Series 1 currently on sale which seems to be worth the money. No pictures of the engine though. Undoubtedly one of the most recognisable four-wheel drives in the world.
This Series One Land Rover is one of the coolest examples we have seen to date. With a few simple switches and a gauge here and there the Land Rovers dash is completely metal with no padding and looks fantastic. No mod cons here, who needs stereos and blue tooth and GPS? This is all metal and no frills. From a period where four-wheel drives where made for working the land not dropping the kids to footy practice, this is a car that even back then boasted itself to be "The World's Most Versatile Vehicle".
These 'Landies' go anywhere, once accounted for 90% of 4WD in Australia and Land Rover claim that 70% of all series production are still in use today. This car is accompanied by the original handbooks and was delivered new to the Snowy Mountain Hydro as one of three delivered in 1951.
A complete knockdown kit assembled in Australia these cars are fast becoming very collectable, the rugged good looks and simple engineering make this model remain the coolest four wheel drive ever made.

And my last competitor... neh! not really. Well any car on sale is a competitor. No pictures of the engine. Needs a lot of work from what I can see. Sure, $10,000 is cheaper than mine. But then the work starts. The time and expenses will probably surpass mine. It's an option though. 1950 Series I

i am getting sick of seeing it everywhere... :D
unfortunately, as nice as it is, it's too dear for what it is in the current market, IMHO....
unless of course that someone "special" comes along.
there is one born every minute they tell me.... finding them seems to be a bit of an issue but.
that said..
i hope it goes to someone that will use it like you do...

Hi there
The vehicles that you have quote prices on above, I question they are getting the money they are seeking (the money is not around at the moment).
The 80" usually bring good money but parts are getting hard to find second hand.
A friend of mine in SA recently purchased a 55 SWB with lots of parts and although it need minor work (condition overall good) it was well under 10k.
So my answer to what it would be worth, the answer is as much as some one wants to pay for it.

I agree. Personally I don't consider a late model S1 as any more desirable (i.e. worth any more) than a SII or early IIA.
A lot of nicely restored classics of many brands are sitting unsold or selling for greatly reduced prices at present.

I am not up on prices at the moment here in Australia, but it can take time to get the money you want, and it probably is worth $12 to $18K but as I said it can take time to get the right person to come along, this might not be time you have. $15k is just short of £9K, in the uk, I think if you are bring a container with house stuff, it maybe worth taking it to uk, as for the same money you may not get as good a vehicle. I don't know your vehicle and I don't know what your plans are with shipping stuff. Good luck

Well, over the holidays the marketing campaign seemed to have brought some results. I now have 5 serious sounding people coming for a test drive this and next week. One of the 5 already wanted to buy it over the phone but I told him to come and have a look first. Just before the holidays I had 2 test drives and those said they would make an offer.
How much any offer will be...???
And then I also had three scam offers who have been reported to the authorities.
I did ask for all your opinions. But as said, more money has gone into Hebe than I am asking for. And although economics aren't great there are still some people who recognize the rare opportunity and seem to have the cash.
I also had 2 serious enquiries from the UK and 1 from Italy. For them the shipping and registration is the issue as I will only assist but they are themselves responsible.
Ebay had a healthy 90 odd watchers in the five day listing. I just relisted it for ten days. The reserve is 1 cent above the starting price.
The decission has been made to sell. Hard, but I will let go with fun trips and great photoshoots for memories. Time to move on. And once in the UK for a few years... shhhtt don't tell my wife.
Although there have been some pessimistic posts here regarding the price I do believe we all agree that it is worth it. The economics hurt me as well and if no one offers, or is mean enough to wait until the week we fly, well bad luck. In that case I will keep it in storage with friends and I will bump the price up by a few thousand to reflect actual financial investment without considering labour etc. And then I will wait very very patiently, shhhtt don't tell my wife.
But, we certainly could use the money for our move, medical expenses, etc and would appreciate it if someone can offer a good home.
Finding a good home is an important factor to the sale.
