[URL="http://www.autoblog.com/volvo/"]Volvo (http://www.autoblog.com/2013/12/09/volvo-polestar-v8-supercars-engine/#aol-comments) may be better known for turbo fives and inline fours, but in 2005 it launched the XC90 (http://www.autoblog.com/volvo/xc90/) with a new eight-cylinder engine built for it by Yamaha (http://www.autoblog.com/tag/yamaha/). Fast forward to this past June when Volvo announced its intention (http://www.autoblog.com/2013/06/17/volvo-joins-australias-v8-supercars-series-w-video/) to enter Australia's V8 Supercars series (http://www.autoblog.com/tag/v8+supercars/), where it would compete with the likes of Ford (http://www.autoblog.com/ford/), Holden (http://www.autoblog.com/category/holden/), Nissan (http://www.autoblog.com/nissan/) and Mercedes-AMG (http://www.autoblog.com/mercedes-benz/). This is the engine with which it intends to do so.

Revealed this weekend at the Sydney 500, this competition-spec powerplant is based on the same B8444S that powered the XC90 and S80 (http://www.autoblog.com/volvo/s80/) (not to mention the Noble M600 (http://www.autoblog.com/tag/noble+m600/)), but tuned for racing duty to be shoehorned into the new S60 (http://www.autoblog.com/volvo/s60/) touring car. The 60-degree aluminum block has been bored out from 4.4 liters to 5.0, its compression ratio boosted to 10:1, modified to run on E85 bio-ethanol and its redline increased to 7500 rpm. Volvo also promises a unique engine note from its new racers.

While Volvo and its racing partner Polestar haven't released official output numbers, regulations call for outputs between 620 and 650 horsepower – in any event, a whole lot more than the 311 hp it produces in stock form. (Noble managed to squeeze that much out of the same block, but that required twin turbochargers while this unit remains naturally aspirated.) Scope out the details in the press release below (http://www.autoblog.com/2013/12/09/volvo-polestar-v8-supercars-engine/#continued) and the photos from the reveal in the gallery above.

Be interesting to see how a multivalve compares to the other motors. They will get those power figures easily though. I recall when a family I knew from work built the first RWD V8 Magna that was a test for mixing into V8 racing, and he thought he could get more power from the V6 than the old V8's.

I wonder how the following for the v8's will drop off once the falcon and holden will end. I for 1 will start to enjoy it again ;)

It'll certainly be a cultural shock not having an "Aussie" V8. Can you imagine an Aussie redneck in a Euro V8 with a VB in the latte holder!

The mind boggles as to the out put of that engine :)

Yes Slunnie you think about it how long has it really been now since we have raced a true Aussie V8, they have been yank engines for many years and still old engineering with push rods, the only benefit GM & Ford have is the many years of development in a very specific field

All these Japs and Euros building V8's to compete in what is (like it or not) a world calls racing category (V8 supercars) and the 'locals' will both no longer have a car with which to participate. Bye bye that series.....

The engine used by Nissan this year is quad cam, multivalve. The Merc probably is as well?

Hopefully Volvo have done their homework and can become competitive quickly.
Fuel economy is also essential in the series, this is also where Nissan are struggling.

theres nothing wrong with pushrod 'technology' at all.

Nascar engines run at 9000+ rpm all day and rarely give trouble.

Very sophisticated engine management systems give massive power outputs.

Top fuel dragsters make over 5000hp with the same technology.....

it would be interesting to know whether someone has tried to make same powers in a dohc engine.

and not just the racing version,,
reports of upwards 28Lper100 towing is not uncommon for the new Y62

Yes, I'd love to see a fuel economy control put into V8 supercars.

.Caculate an energy limit for each race factored in over distance.

The teams probably have this info already.

Make them perform better without unlimited fuel usage and pass this technology on.

F1 have achieved this and every team changes their fuelling for every race, making the car as fuel efficient as it can possibly be.

I think you'll find nascar and Top Fuel are regulated to pushrods,,
line up two identical size engines and the OHC will always win.
where it loses is the time it takes to rebuild one--

an acquaintance of mine admits to 28ltrs/100 from his V8 petrol LC200....its a business tow wagon and he laughs it off.

Volvo will need more than 620-650hp to be competitive, 680 would be nearer the mark, and yes, fuel economy may well be an issue, as it has been, and is, for Nissan & Mercedes.
Cheers, Pickles.
