Hi All,

Ive finally started to resurrect my 1958 Landy and have managed to pick up another one for parts. My question is this, the other one I have picked up (its a 2A Hardtop) has a full door on the rear instead of the usual split rear tailgate.

Can anyone shed any light on this difference? I havent looked into the other car as to year or if its ex miltary, could it possibly be ex ambulance??

Also if anyone is keen to swap it for a split tailgate setup im all ears as I want to keep my tailgate set up in the '58.

cheers

Hello from Brisbane.

Sounds like you have the standard station wagon rear door there - fairly common I think.

It may have been an accessory on regular full hardtop trucks.

Hi Eddie,

Station Wagons (both 88"and 109") came with one-piece doors with a different shaped window (larger) than standard hardtop vehicles. These rear doors were also available as an Optional Extra on vehicle order and as a spare part for later fitting.

Certainly Grenville Motors - the Land Rover Distributors in NSW - also made a kit that joined the two halves of a standard set-up and was fitted up with supplied hinges, etc when they could not supply enough wagon rear doors.
These are often seen on ex-Government vehicles such as Forestry, Water Board, Electricity Commission, Police and Snowy Mountains Authority (SMHEA). SMA also had completely fabricated rear doors on their Land Rovers and other vans like Holden, etc.

my 2a station wagon has a one piece rear door, it's great to have a hinged door rather than a lift up top and tailgate, but when I take the roof off and go back to a ute, I will need a tailgate.
