I have had my 1999 td5 Defender in with my local land rover independent mechanic last week to do a bunch of things including fixing an oil leak at the front of the engine - oil has ended up on the fan, flicked everywhere, and so I had no idea of the source.

He didn't get to complete the job, but gave me the vehicle back for the weekend to pack it as we are headed off on a months touring on Thursday. He has taken off the fan, and cleaned up the top half of the engine, and was keen for me to drive it a bit - I guess to help find the source of the leak. It will be going back on Monday morning.

See photo - I have circled in red a bolt hole where there appears to be fresh oil. It hasn't dripped down the face yet, but if I hold my finger on the hole with the engine running, there is what appears to be fresh oil.

I'm not mechanically minded, and other than basic servicing, don't do any of my own work on the vehicle, but am keen to learn.

Can anyone tell me what this is?

On my TD5 when the EGR was removed the mechanic left the stud out of that hole and it leaked like yours.
Just get a short stud or bolt and put it in the hole to block it off ( Careful if your bolt is too long it might hit the timing chain)

I left the stud after EGR removal there too. Fit a short M8 (just guessing) bolt as a plug there

Damn it! I have to review my "clean and order" values, my engine doesn't look like that....
