Hi folks - NRMA are checking out this car for me today;

1997 Land Rover Defender Ute | Cars, Vans & Utes | Gumtree Australia Bega Valley - Pambula | 1031175517 (http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/pambula/cars-vans-utes/1997-land-rover-defender-ute/1031175517)

They've only just got it in the workshop now. He said it generally looks pretty good for its age - I asked him about rust in the doors and he said there are a few little bubbles in the paint at the botton of the doors near the joints... how concerned should I be? He said they are pretty small and he'd send me photos...

Any other suggestions about what I should get checked most welcome...

I would've rather put it in at some landrover specialist but this NRMA centre was all that I could find nearby...

I'll get a report on it all this arvo...

if its only the doors dont worry about it they're only held on by 8 bolts and a check bar

if its in the firewall or the floor brace that runs under the door youd want to fix that qiuckly

I hope it all goes well for you - I love my TDi 130, for all its idiosyncracies.

The only thinmg that scaresme about it though is it's overwhelming power and acceleration. Scary ! :lol2:

Lots of extras there, so seems like a good buy.

My doors were very bad, cost $1,700 to fix. Sound like those just need a touch up. Big thing is the drain holes get blocked. So when you get it clean them out and keep a check on the doors. Don't let it get bad as the two metals will react as they have with mine. Long term I will replace my doors as it is a forever car.

Looks a good pick up for that price, depending on report, like the canopy, the spare wheel is not a wolf wheel
Very nice and clean from the pics:twisted:

Hmm I had decided not to go ahead with this one but now with all these replies saying she looks like a good truck you've got me wondering! :o

The report didn't turn up anything serious.. the mechanic said it looks quite good for the age. One thing is that the clock has 370,000km on it and not 285,000 - the owner said he's not sure how that got on the advert. I didn't really want to buy a car with that much mileage...

Its got a few minor oil leaks underneath.. one wheel bearing needs adjusting/replacing... rubber hoses/belts need replacing..

It does have a "new" engine with only 50,000k on it but there are no receipts or anything to show this - was a previous owner and done around 4 years ago from what I can tell. It has been sitting for 18 months or so without much use - but it has just got its blue slip done a few days ago.

If anyone else is interested just ring the number on the advert and the owner would probably be happy to put you onto the NRMA fella who did the inspection (at my cost!) :)

A good decision I'd say. That's top dollar for a Tdi and it's too expensive for that kind of mileage. And the fact that claims about mileage don't match reality would make me suspicious of everything else.

I just picked up a 96 130 with about 310,000 on the clock for under half of that, but also saw another 96 130 sold three weeks ago for $15,500, but it only had 45,000 on the clock.
