I've recently bought a couple of toolboxes that are powdercoated but have overspray over the upper surfaces from the previous owner.*I've tried thinners in a hidden spot and it softened the coating, so thats out, and god alone knows how old the overspray is so I doubt a clar bar session will work.....Can anyone suggest a solution?

try to sand the overspray off with 1200 grit

Long shot... Accitone or Braklean.. Again, try both in a hidden test spot. Dependant on the overspray, a razor blade will sometimes lift it leaving the coat underneath un damaged, after a little softening first. Good luck.

acrylic laquer should wipe off with thinners before you soften the powder coat... If that didn't work, it's 2K urethane ..................... which means "oh crap", I'd suggest a razor blade only your talking a textured surface, so it won't work.

Try the clay bar anyway. I have used it on a couple of my cars and a good mate has used it to remove overspray off an aircraft from both the windows and airframe. It might just take a while longer for older caked on gunk. Good luck with it!

I know this is extreme but I've found that brake fluid doesn't affect powder coating.. it will make short work of the paint.
...but YMMV :D

Third vote for the Clay Bar. I removed some quite heavy overspray from the paint work on my Discovery using a clay bar.

I haven't used clay bar but when I get overspray on Monty I just use a bit of car polish and it comes straight off.

To remove overspray I have always used either Repo/Kitten No2 polish or Kitten Water Rubbing Compound.

Try something like CRC Paint Doctor. Available through Supercheap / Repco etc.
I've got a tube of it in the shed and it works well for me.
Another very similar product, also quite good, is Meguiars Scratch-X.
Both products are intended more for removing scratches / swirl marks, but I've found that they also work well with removing paint from other vehicles / bollards etc picked up in minor knocks (only on SWMBO's car of course :p) and we have used both on overspray on the son's Mazda.

Tried a couple of different brands of clay bars (which yielded the same results as previous times i'd tried with overspray), prepsol, brake cleaner, etc to no avail....
Couple of old spraypainters both echoed UncleHo's reccomendation for Kitten No2..... which I've long held to be evil in a can and only to be used in case of world ending catastrophies.....
thier only additional advice? wax afterwards......
it works, and quite well, but concerningly, it seemed to work better with a smear of polish, wait a minute or so and some light rubbing instead of whack it on and go for broke.... makes me wonder exactly how harmful it can be.....
