My 109 series 3 station wagon currently has a 2.25 petrol sitting up front, but i have something that looks like a diesel filter holder type thing bolted to the bulkhead, it is not connected to anything, do petrol cars have this type of filter?, is it a case that its just not hooked up or was my wagon originally a diesel?, are there any other tell tale signs that i could look for, the build plate inside the cabin say's petrol!, so im now very confussed (not uncommon) any pointers?

someone has fitted a diesel filter to it.
the work very well on petrol as well style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif
my spare parts series iii had 2 of them on it as it was diesel before being switched to a 186.
have a look on the bulkhead and see if there is a resistor coil for the heater plugs on the engine, you may have an ex diesel bulkhead ?

Not to doubt previous replies.... you could use this link from an earlier topic to check the vin no. details and maybe also the original engine under engine type:
