View Full Version : Looking for some 17 inch rims

Hi all,
I have been looking around for some 17 inch rims for my 2010 Freelander 2 TD4 for some time now and I am having a tough time. I currently have 19 inch rims which make life painful if you want to do some more robust off road work. Does anyone have any ideas where I could find a good cheap set that I could put on when I choose to tackle the rough stuff.

Welcome to the forum!

FWIW I purchased a 2010 Freelander 2 TD4-e and it came with a spare set of (4) 17inch rims in addition to the 19 inchers on the vehicle and in the boot.

To obtain the same genuine Landrover rim to use as a spare with the 17inch set I started by looking on-line in Australia, but I ended up shopping in the UK. I purchased an identical rim shipped over to my door for the princely sum of $218AU (the local Landrover crowd had quoted me $1400 for the same rim to be imported new from the UK!!).

If you don't mind me asking, who in the UK did you deal with?

I trawled on eBay in the UK and got lucky to find someone who not only had the exact rim I needed but was also prepared to ship it. The seller name was merlin_international.

FWIW - The Frelander 2 uses the same sizes as a lot of other cars in, what used to be PAG (Volvo, Ford, Jag, etc...). I have seen some of the test mules running on Volvo rims...

You might like to be a little cautious about rims from other brands. Check that the off-set matches to be completely happy.

Definitely and a double check of the PCD wouldn't hurt either.

Definitely double check but a lot of the 5x stud rims from other PAG cars will fit. Certainly worth concentrating your search there. ;)

Don't forget that there is a massive amount of crossover & collaboration that went on between the brands in the PAG. Floor pans, suspension systems, engines, gearboxes, engine management, switchgear, blah, blah...

Koya XJs can be drilled to fit the FL2 and I have found them for $225 fitted. I'm putting a set if Scorpion ATRs in 245/65R17 on with them next month and will post picks. Good bye Cross Contacts, will have 5x diamond turned contrast paint 19" wheels and 6 x Continental UHP 235/55R19 for sale if anyone is interested.

I picked up two sets of Volvo alloys on ebay - one including centre caps for $250; the second for $160. All in good condition; pcd, off-set identical. After getting six shod with Cooper AT3s I sold the remaining two on ebay for $160.
The end result was six wheels for off-road adventures for $250 plus rubber. :D

Thanks cdn. Looking forward to checking out those pics. I'll be especially keen to confirm that there are no issues with the storage of the spare. I hear it's tight!

The spare isn't tight with 245/65/17's. In fact, 245/70/17's fit comfortably all round as does the spare. The 245/70/17's really make the car a weapon off road, just ask Vesko.

Yes I enjoyed reading of the exploits in the high country!

I took some measurements and noted that the wheel/tyre combo should fit as far as the diameter goes, but by my measurements it seemed as if the 245 width might result in the cover over the spare not sitting flush. This wasn't a problem then?

My Freelander is a 2010 td4_e - namely a manual. To look after my drive-train I was thinking of just going with the 246/65/17 Scorpions. I've always got the trusty Disco 300tdi for the more adventurous stuff that needs a bit more clearance, deeper water crossings, etc. :)

Mine is an 08 TD4 and I've been running 245/65/17's for over 100,000 kms with no issues. The spare fits fine in mine.

Yes, it's a weapon!

And the 245/70/17's fit nicely everywhere, including the flush spare :-)

Hi All,
I have been following this discussion with great interest. My 2010 TD4_e has the 19" rims and I want a set of rims and tyres for some occasional off-road trips.

A useful site to compare the effect of different rim and tyre combinations is Visual Tyre Size Calculator | Kouki Tech (http://www.kouki.co.uk/utilities/visual-tyre-size-calculator). Apart from side-by-side comparison of dimensions, it also lets you know the change to the speedo reading.

Regarding supply, I've tried a couple of local Canberra dealers but they don't get back to me so maybe I'll check out the Sydney dealer mentioned in an earlier post.

Loved the trip notes regarding the Geehi trip.

G'day.
I have been toying with the idea of getting myself a new Freelander.
I hate having mag wheels on anything that I might use for outback travel.
So, I would want five steel wheels fitted with 245 or 240/70/17 BFG AT's,
bolt straight on permanently and mags into skip.

Is there an after market steel wheel readily available ?

Ta.

Why 'After market'??

There's probably some off-the-shelf stuff from other PAG vehicles, which might well fit the bill.

Another option is to stick with ally & just equip yourself for working on ally instead??

I've done thousands of kms on most of the Outback tracks, hit plenty of rocks and corrugations. During that time I've had 6 tyres destroyed but never had a failure with a rim. Rims for the FL2 are pretty scarce and I've not come across any steel ones except for hearing about 16" ones in the UK on the base model diesels (they won't fit the petrol brake caliper). 16" would open up a lot of cheaper tyre possibilities, that's for sure. If you find some 16-17" steelies then there are people on here interested in getting them as well. For outback travel, stick with a tyre size that is a little more common. 245/65/17 is way more common than 245/70/17, but neither are very common at little outback roadhouses. I had to wait overnight for 2 245/65/17 Bridgestone Duelers to get to Marree, I didn't have a choice in brand it was those or nothing.
