Can any one tell me what the purpose of the small bolt is that is located on top of the water pump on a 200TDi motor?
I tried to upload a photo but I couldn't do it

Are you referring to the thermostat housing by any chance; and not the pump (coolant pump as Haynes manual calls it)?
Nice gold nugget by the way.

No, it is the water pump. You can see the bolt head in the pic.
Yeah it is a nice nugget. My wife found it several years ago.

Looks like someone added a port for greasing the bearing. I've done so myself in the past. Remove the plug, it looks like 1/8 BSP, if there's grease under there, temporarily install a matching grease nipple and put another shot of grease in there.

I can't say for certain on a 200tdi but on a series water pump, that bolt would be to position and retain the bearing. The bolt should have a spigot on the end of the thread which locates into a hole in the bearing.

Cheers, Mick.

Sorry to keep at it but I don't believe it for greasing .
The bolt is item 2. It's called a WATER PUMP LOCATING SCREW
Any other ideas?
Just click on the pic to enlarge it
