View Full Version : Australian Anthem

"Advance Australia Fare" is the national anthem we all know and love. Well, a few of us love it and even less know it.

If we ever had to change it again, I'm sure Peter Allen's "I Still Call Australia Home" would be right up there.
I was listening to GANGgajang's "Sounds of Then", another candidate.
Mark Callaghan, GANGgajang's lead singer in an interview this morning, suggested a few others that I think could be called "Australian Anthem".
Goanna - "Solid Rock"
Ice House - "Great Southern Land"
Men at Work - "Down Under"

Have you got any suggestions for a New Australian Anthem?

The best Anthems in the World, ? only two

God Defend New Zealand

God of nations at thy feet
In the bonds of love we meet.
Hear our voices, we entreat,
God defend our free land.
Guard Pacific's triple star
From the shafts of strife and war,
Make her praises heard afar,
God defend New Zealand.
E Ihoa Atua,
O nga Iwi! Matoura,
Ata whakarongona;
Me aroha roa.
Kia hua ko te pai;
Kia tau to atawhai;
Manaakitia mai
Aotearoa
Men of every creed and race
Gather here before thy face,
Asking thee to bless this place,
God defend our free land.
From dissension, envy, hate,
And corruption guard our state,
Make our country good and great,
God defend New Zealand.

And from South Africa;

Nkosi sikelel' iAfrika
Maluphakanyisw' uphondo lwayo,
Yizwa imithandazo yethu,
Nkosi sikelela, thina lusapho lwayo.
Morena boloka setjhaba sa heso,
O fedise dintwa la matshwenyeho,
O se boloke, O se boloke setjhaba sa heso,
Setjhaba sa South Afrika - South Afrika.
Uit die blou van onse hemel,
Uit die diepte van ons see,
Oor ons ewige gebergtes,
Waar die kranse antwoord gee,
Sounds the call to come together,
And united we shall stand,
Let us live and strive for freedom,
In South Africa our land.

Nothing else comes close, makes Girt by sea seem lame, Bob

A great song but 3.48 minutes long? don't think so. We need a modern anthem, something new. Bob

I'm happy with "Advance Australia Fair" thanks Mick, but here's a candidate for Somalia, Iran, Shri Lanka or Vietnam.

Interestingly enough, I think your right about not many people knowing what our anthem is,,, or its words I should say. I certainly don't
I'm not sure if schools sing our anthem now, but we did when I was there, every Monday at assembly.
I guess its probably thought of as "bad form", along the lines of not allowing kids to say "Merry Xmas" any more,,, it has to be "Happy Holidays",,, what a load of :censored: crap.

I'll have "Great Southern Land" any day ;)

I misspelled updated the songs spelling to be more in line with current Australian values.

I always liked Fred Dagg's (AKA John Clarke's) version... :)

God loves New Zealand, he gave us boiling mud,
God's the full quid, because that isn't all he did,
God gave us rugby, because you can't kick boiling mud,
God gave us sheep...because you can't shear boiling mud,
God gave us cricket...because you can't lose at boiling mud,
God gave us Australia...because you can't live in boiling mud.
God loves New Zealand, he gave us boiling mud...

Another vote here for this one. There's a few other versions of the same song around, but none as good as the Seekers, especially with Judith Durham singing it. ;)

The Wurumpi version of My Island Home strikes a chord with me...maybe a slight re-write? Otherwise we'll all be considered Galuwinkians :)

From the Samuel Pepys Show, the venerable Fred Dagg (aka John Clarke) prior to when he also jumped the ditch to become an icon.

Loved The Seekers "I Am Australian"
and
John Williamson - "True Blue"

They are both definitely contenders. Any more out there?

They're all good but for something different maybe Australian Boy by Lee Kernaghan, he's got many other Australiana songs, or maybe to spice things up something by AC/DC just to make every other national anthem sound boringLee Kernaghan - Australian Boy (Music Video) - YouTubeLee Kernaghan - Ute Me (Official Music Video) - YouTubeAC/DC - Highway To Hell - YouTubeJust a few:D

I think, if we change the Anthem, it should not be up to the older generation to find a replacement, but our younger ones should determine it, it would be appropriate , to lead Australia into a new millennium. And our talented young people could do a great job, Bob

I vote for leave it as it is.

And yes I do know the words.
Yes I did sing it when I was at school

And does anyone know how many verses there actually are.

When I first learnt it at school there were 3. Now there are 2.

Cheers

May be true but, if it ain't written yet, we can't sing it now.

I want to hear the contenders.

The original song had seven I think.
"God save the Queen was so much easier to remember.

I reckon "The Seekers" are winning it for me.

There is only one, & it will not change , but we can fantasise I guess. Bob

However, the best alternative I have heard is this, I would vote for it.

this one will be easy.
aussie aussie aussie oi oi oi.

From what I have seen most primary schools learn both verses now and do so once a week.
Personally I think we should leave it but if it was going to get changed I would go for the one by the seekers, "I am Australian"
