Found this 2013 book by Bill Garner, head writer of Blue Heelers, in my local library, published by University of NSW Press from his Phd thesis and its great - thoroughly recommend it.
Basically he surveys camping in Australian history from the Aborigines through the First Fleet, the explorers and settlers till today. Most people camped, even the rich. They were still living in tents at Sydney two years after arriving and Phillip's plan for an English village as a sign of settlement was never built. Garner argues camping has shaped our national character and society and continues to do so today. A very interesting book.
