Reading the news about the new Trojan family virus and the problems that it is causing on computers run on MS OS I just wonder if it will be a good idea to have sensitive files in a Linux based computer.
I Linux immune to this kind of problems or not a popular target?
Security experts warn of growing threat of ransomware 'CryptoLocker' (http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-12-20/rising-tide-of-ransomware/5170422)

You'd think so but no.
Crypto-locker will go after any windows network shares it can find so make sure your linux file server doesn't allow write access by default
so while it wouldn't be directly impacted a compromised windows box in the house could still cause some damage to the files on if from what I understand

I found this on the HitmanPro site. I have used their software successfully for Malware removal in the past, & this looked interesting in relation to CryptoLocker.
HitmanPro.Alert CryptoGuard - SurfRight (http://www.surfright.nl/en/cryptoguard)

User behaviour is the major cause for these types of infections. Don't click on attachments from people you don't know, or were not expecting.
For this one, the zbot malware infects you first - from you clicking on what appears to be a PDF file or similar - and it is actually a self-executing ZIP file.
Once infected with the zbot malware - it goes to a Command & Control site to download and install Cryptolocker.

And if you think you're being hit. Pull the power and Internet plugs.
The main protection is dated backups of your data. If you can't throw your computer in water and be back up and running in a day off your backups then you are doing it wrong.
