I picked up a couple cans of some stuff called spam at the super market, one was turkey. After opening the ring pull tab the producted was revealed. It had the smell and texture of dog food, tasted pretty average.
Got me wondering if it is just a better class of dog food that is safe for human consumption?
Reminded me of a guy I knew in the snowy mountains on a farm who went to the fridge and made himself a meat loaf sandwich during the night whilst the wife was in bed. Next morning he commented to his wife how good the meat loaf was she had bought.
She was suprised as she never bought any meat loaf. It turned out Fred found one of those dog food rolls in the fridge and sliced it up for his sandwiches. He told me over and over how good it tasted when ever it was brought up whilst we shared a brew of tea

Slice up the spam and fry it with your eggs. OK for a camping brekky. If you're feeling adventurous, try some camp pie. You'll think the spam is ham off the bone.
My sister had a Dutch girl stay with her for a few weeks in Darwin. She thought the girl was feeding the dogs every day, but it turns out she was actually making her lunch. What gave it away was when she asked my sister to buy some different Fritz, as she wasn't keen on the one in the fridge. :o:D:
Imagine those Sanger's in the hot sun.:D

Spam is fine fried or grilled in a sandwich, smothered in sauce. Nothing wrong with that at all. Uncooked though, not so keen

Hey Ian, next time we meet at Mount Mee I'll be sure to pack a tin to throw on the BBQ. I'm sure the Kookaburra's will eat it :D

Try one of the premium single serve cat foods. A food technologist friend of mine regularly serves D**E Salmon Mousse variety as an entree at her dinner parties. None of the guests have ever twigged to what they are eating. She works for the company and knows what goes in and how it is made, and has no issues eating it herself.
On the other hand I spent a fair amount of my younger days in meatworks, and I know exactly what goes into camp pie and corned beef - the hearts add a certain richness of flavour! After 24 hours in the retort it could have started as fillet and the result would be the same!

Ha! Interesting one this! I'm from the UK and can't stand spam, but every time I open a fresh tin of the Supercoat Meat for for my dogs, I can't get over how good it smells... The day of tasting is getting ever closer.... Much to SWMBO's disgust! Whiskers 'Oh so Fishy' smells pretty good too when fresh!!! :p

the ingredients listed on classic Spam include: pork with ham, salt, water, modified potato starch, sugar, and sodium nitrite. Potato starch is used for binding the chopped meat together and sodium nitrate is used as a preservative. The jelly like substance that surrounds spam is caused by natural gelatins in the meat that solidify when cooled (like an aspic). Depending on the variety of Spam, other ingredients, including chicken or turkey, may be added.
In 56 grams of the poison you will find 40 mg of cholesterol and 790 mg of sodium and 16 grams of fat
It is like kitchen scraps put on a blender.

Lucky it was a female and not a male. Might have started licking his balls.:)
As for SPAM. It is an acronym for "Stuff Posing As Meat"

Just like cheap supermarket sausages, may as well have used the sawdust off the butchers floor as there is likely to be more meat.

Ha Ha.
Once when I was a kid, I was visiting my grandparents. I went and fed the cats one day, and the can of whiskas said "Sardines and Tuna".
"Hmmm", I thought. "I'm quite partial to both of those", "and it does smell kinda good". And so, much to the cats disgust, I helped myself to a mouthful.
It tastes nothing like it smells. :(
And the problem with Spam is, it's too dear now.

I got a laugh out of this comment. It reminded me of my first infraction I received on this forum.
It was a thread about Maccas food and I got into trouble for my description of how I thought Maccas tasted.

To be blunt about this! Whenever i get constipated I will eat a can of SPAM. It works miracles just like a pull through with a wire brush. It keeps me slim, trim and regular.

Bully beef? No, bully beef was the name for the tinned corned beef, Spam is ham and pork.

You're right, now I remember, and also remember being told to always get corned beef, not corned meat. A lot more unknowns in corned meat.

Certainly do - just got some in my email!
Seriously though, I was probably in my forties before I knew what Spam was (I had heard the name, or read it, but never seen it). I suspect that it was not marketed in Australia until at least the 1970s. I grew up on "bully beef" (tinned corned beef) of course, but also Camp Pie, which, come to think of it, I have not seen for many years. Had a lot in common with Spam, but came in a round tin. Bully beef was a mainstay of Army field rations from WW1 probably to the Korean war.

Bully beef (http://books.google.com.au/books?id=Ma4Xcv8WzQAC&pg=PA62&lpg=PA62&dq=booyoolee+beef&source=bl&ots=OMlF6wqais&sig=zZehAaUCTEiDW2vE0Gh11Zp5Dgw&hl=en&sa=X&ei=TbS2UtH5NcnBkwXp4IGgDQ&ved=0CDUQ6AEwAQ#v=onepage&q=booyoolee%20beef&f=false) has an even longer history in Australia. In 1864 pastoralist H B Hughes set up a cannery at Booyoolee Station at Gladstone SA and his tinned beef was used on the construction of the Overland Telegraph and later the Boer War, and the cannery closed in the early 1900's. The remnant portion of the station is still owned by direct descendants of the original land holder, one of whom is a good family friend.

Ham is pork in the same way that bacon is pork. But "ham" generally mean a cured, or cured and smoked cut of pork.
So it's exactly the same as pork, only different. ;)
