I will drop my guard for a minute, & say Our big Brother, the Royal Navy, has always been the best, there are two other Navies close behind, the R.A.N, & R.N.Z.N., in what order depends on who you talk to, but I found the NZ Navy to be professional, switched on, and someone you would like covering your back. [ Can't believe I said that, must be Xmas] AND, the Canadians are up there as well [ and that has nothing to with the fact their ships at the RIMPAC exercise back in 1970 something had beer machines on board , a beer for a quarter, where the Aussie sailors spent lunchtime. And we wondered why the Canucks were 2 pot screamers, ashore in Pearl. Anyway Merry Xmas, from me, & merry Xmas from them, Bob

My Dad came back to civvy street not long after I was born. As a youngster I somehow got the idea that he had been in the merchant navy. He corrected me, telling me that he had been in the RN, Real Navy; I believed that was what RN meant for a few years after that.

I think my Dad served on the Vampire.
I served on one Vampire , the Daring class built at Cockatoo Island, best ship I served on in my 21 Years. good men, all, Bob
Lord above send down a dove
To look after Daring sailors
For as we pay off the ship we love
We hope she won't be razors
We salute the Fleet that is left this week
Mourning the good ship's passing
For this is the last of the destroyers sleek
That has served at sea so lasting
This day at ten an era will end
Of ships and men both rugged
But the Fleet will shine and continue to fend
Though today the Bat is buggered
Farewell and Audamis [sic]"
Signal sent from HMAS Vampire on her last day of service, 12 August 1986, to Commander, Australian Fleet.

That fireplace and nice sofa just had to be from the Wardroom.
We lower deck men never got niceties like that.
Got to agree with you about the old "Zac" Bob.
I did her last 12 months and decommisioning, great little ship with a huge heart.
And "Vamps", guess who has the door plaque from the "Joss'" Office bolted to the household small room door?

I can remember the wife and myself doing a dog show at Garden Island in the mid/late 70's and the Vampire was in dry dock at the time, wasn't she moored at the "Dolphens" for at time, I have a vague recollection that she had a broken/damaged back caught in pack ice we were told.

Vampire conducted the last 21 inch torpedo firing in the RAN, during an exercise against HMS London. London sent the signal, " congratulations, Vampire your torpedo passed under our bow ". The Skipper had Vamps. flat out, I thought she would shake apart, but the old girl did it easy, Bob

Danny joined the Royal Navy during WW2, as a matter of fact, where he did his first performance in drag whilst part of a Services performance group. Bob [ some good film of old London here. Notice one of Danny's shows was called " soldiers in drag" ]

Bob, I've asked my sister (custodian of family history) on which ships and where my Dad served.
I recall some of his stories.
During the Korean conflict, his ship was at anchor off the troubled peninsular. He and two other Able Seamen were bearing long arms (303s?) in company with an Officer carrying a sidearm, were shorebound in a small motor vessel. A shark approached their craft and the OIC gave permission or ordered the men to shoot it. All four men emptied their weapons, result............RN-0 v Shark-1.
