Hi everyone. The tyres on the wife's petrol D3 are about finished and I'm looking to put all terrains on. I make this decision purely from a selfish point of view (i think she may give the car to me and get something else to drive around). With this in mind I'm looking for something that will do mostly around town but with a bit of off road mixed in. Mainly holidays because the kids still love to get out and i love to mountain bike. I drive a V8 D2 with muddies and I don't do enough off road any more to warrant muddies so on to AT's we go.
All suggestions welcome.
Thanks for your help in advance. :p

what size rims are you running? most people have had a good run with Bridgestone D697's i personally needed something a bit more aggressive and put 17's on and have gone for the ProComp Extreme AT's ( pretty much a mix of a standard AT with a MT)
cheers

Cooper zeons here in a 285/60/18. Tyres have been fantastic so far and handled the cape with no punctures, they performed awesome on the old coach rd to Maytown!!

Have had two sets of Pirelli Scorpions and am currently on Geolanders. Both great tyres on R18.

I'm running Cooper AT3's on the standard 18" rims.
Done 30k still plenty of rubber and still drive well, they are starting to get a little drummy though now.

Pirelli scorpions , super tyre, get the LT tyre, very strong but supple carcass,
Soon as the coopers that came with the car wear out that's what I'm getting. Two punctures already with the coopers ATR and that's just on road.
All round the outback never had an issue with scorpions and quiet on road as we'll.

I'm running General Grabber AT2. Bloody good on road and great for the off road stuff we do, mainly beach with some mud/paddock work. I got 50,000 out of my last set and just replaced them about one month ago.

I would love to try the Maxxis AT but they dont have it in an 18. Ive had Maxxis muds for 4 years now and its been an excellent tyre both on and off road. I like the look of the Cooper but have had good and bad results ( one particular trip i ripped the side wall out of 2 tyres and limped back to melbourne with a stack of tyre repair strings jammed into the side wall. Rough trip.
I really need something that mostly drives around town and can do a few trips into the high country a year.

30k isnt enough really. Have you had any problems with tearing side walls?

I'm using Cooper ATR on 17" wheels. Run very quiet on road. Good grip always and lots of tread to go after about 4 years use.

timdo1,
I recently (7,500km ago) changed to the Bridgestone D697 AT which is also a LT construction.
So far they have been great, quieter on road than my previous Cross Contact AT and off road so far very good and they do no cut chip anywhere near like the Cross Contacts use to.
I am doing a bit some driving in the Vic High Country over Christmas and will likely post something after that trip.
Also there are plenty of threads on here about most the tires mentioned so far, so check back and you will get lots of different opinions and thoughts.
Overall I would be happy to recommend the D697 !

I didn't actually say they will only do 30k I said mine had done 30k and still had plenty of rubber.

Had a set of Genral Grabber AT2s which did about 50k and performed extremely well on and off road. I replaced them with General Grabber ATs, mostly because they were out of stock of the AT2 at the time. They also have been great, but I am getting some superficial tearing and cuts on the side walls, they have done some rough tracks though.
Am thinking I will get some D697s next, just because of the LT construction. Would be nice if there were more legal choices for these cars in LT and Muddies.

I'm with And3rew on the GG ATs I replaced my AT3s with ATs due to stock issues and have had more issues with cuts on the sidewalls and I don't think that the ATs are as good on steep downslopes as the AT3s either. They are, however quite a bit quieter on bitumen. If I had to buy tyres again I'd happily go with the General Grabber AT3 after looking around at the other offerings. I Have D697s on my Falcon RTV ute and I'm not impressed enough to put them on the Disco as they have the same style of tread as the GG ATs.

I had 18inch Cooper AT3's on my D3 for 2 years, always got the 10,000KM free check by Tyrepower and never had a problem. Not 1 puncture.
They were always very quiet and comfortable. 80,000Kms and still had about 40% tread, I was amazed.
I thought I would try the Bridgestone 697 this time around because they are LT's and are the duck's guts at the moment from all reports.
I am very happy with them, very quiet and comfortable also but you can notice they are a little firmer at the same pressures than the passenger car tyres.
I was annoyed 3 weeks after I got the 697's I picked up a nail in the sidewall so now my children play with it in our backyard, my Boss didn't seem to care too much! It's my company car.

Update ...only just put my AT3's back onthe D3 around the time I wrote my last comment in this thread, have done another 1,000 k's since then and I must amit I had forgotten how nice and well handling this particular model Coopers are.
Mind you I have had BFG Mud tyres fitted for the last six months.

I have the GG AT's on my D4.
Done 40,000 km so far and they still have plenty of tread.
To be fair I have not done much 4x4 on them but they are good on bitumen both wet & dry.
I do have a minor harmonic vibration noise AT 100 km/h smooth bitumen.
I will let you know how they go on sand next week.
