Just had an email. One of those pass it round ones, as one gets.
This said the Cardwell Council had banned Christmas lights due to complaints from the 100 strong Muslim community there.
It said they found the Christian practice offensive and it should be done in the privacy of there own homes.
Can anyone from up there confirm this or is it another of those half truth beatups.

Bastards should be banned there a serious pain in the arse to live next to I. Can tell you

?

Do you mean it is a pain living next to a set of Christmas lights?

Do you mean it is a pain living next to the sort of person who tries to stir up trouble by sending out hoax emails?

The only other meaning I can think of would be one that has racist overtones, so I'm sure it can't be that, especially at this time of Peace and Goodwill to All Men and Women. :D

I'd heard that story too.Didn't know whether to believe it or not.Trouble is,in our politically correct don't offend anyone society we're becoming,it could be feasible:(

You probably don't want to visit our place at this time of year then...:D

Every house on our side of the street has lights up, and most of the other side. Looks great, and you put up with the extra traffic, it's Christmas - relax and smile a little:).

Merry Christmas everyone.

Considering the fact he must be travelling at about the speed of light, the reindeer must produce more greenhouse gas than many small countries!

Be ironic if Christmas lights banned in Oz seeing all the supermarkets and department stores in the Middle East including Saudi Arabia were all decked out with red and green bunting and playing Jingle Bells or Ginger Ben Rock continuously on their PAs when we lived there, and I am sure it will be the same now.
Used to drive the Mutawa ( Religious Police) spare but if you listen to Jingle Bells there is nothing about Christ or Christmas in it.

They all sold "Happy Holiday" cards also.

Moslems believe Christ was a prophet and in my experience most go with the flow, except maybe for the nutters.
You may also be shocked to learn that many Moslems like a drink also.

The issue is often not the non christian groups, bu the perception we are offending. Granted there are some that are anti Christmas and my answer to them if this offends you either bugger off to a country that is of your religion base or we ban your religion altogether here.
So sick of the mentality that we cannot offend. The utter rubbish that you cannot even say Christmas anymore and have to say Happy Holidays instead. No Santa in a lot of pageants any more. Santa is not even a religious figure so WTF?
As for Christmas lights, nothing wrong with them but they do attract idiots, we have had lights stolen again this year, what is it with some people.

The utter rubbish that you cannot even say Christmas anymore and have to say Happy Holidays instead.

I was wished 'Happy Holidays' by an American lady the other night. It was the first time I had heard it for real, even though I had heard it on telly many times. It was hard to be offended as she was being so nice in the way it was said, and as my mates and I were sitting in a darkened corner, she couldn't see us well, so I figured she may have thought we may have been Jews or Muslims, so gave a generic pleasantry. I was later wished Merry Christmas by a Muslim friend and two Jewish shopkeepers, which made me smile, but I thought later, how should I have responded to them?

You should have thanked them and wished them and their families health and happiness.

The occasion to wish Moslems good wishes etc is the end of Ramadan or Eid al Fitr.
You can wish them a happy Eid.

Except its a bit late as EID is over for this year.

IIRC it was mid October and the Jewish Hanukkah ended on the 5th December, so offering them greetings for either of those religious days only shown one's ignorance of other faiths.

IMHO uncalled for.
I think to a normally pedantic reader, one would accept it as a general statement not specific to now.
As Ramadan is well publicised, most will know when it starts and ends.

I'm with you Gav, Mick had better not drop around as it may offend. We will probably do our traditional Christmas night drive around to look at the light. Your estate always rates a visit as well as Mt Holden. It's a great way to mix with the community as everyone is out and mixing with each other and enjoying it.

Hope everyone has a safe and Merry Christmas.

Sounds like you have some pretty ordinary people around them parts if you have stubbies and butts left on your lawn. It sounds like the people are the problem not the lights. I am having to adjust my perception of Canberrans.

I would have told her where she can stick her happy holidays and in this country it is ****ing MERRY CHRISTMAS

Fed up with political correctness.

Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

Quote of the year Mick! To bloody right!

As a kid I loved the light displays, but now all I can see is a waste. The displays do seem more big w and kmart based than of years passed = cheap and tacky though.

Neighbours each side are pretty keen on the Christmas lights and their displays get more complex each year, so I put some up to fill the black gap between their houses. This year we're buying solar lights so no effect on the power bill.
Its just a bit of fun.
Mind you, we visited the Brisbane street which was judged to have the best Christmas lights display last week and the traffic was pretty bad. Most of the street was particpating and raising money for a charity by selling souvenirs and for photos, but I felt a bit sorry for those residents not participating as the traffic and noise could have gotten a bit too much after a few days, I think.

Regards Philip AIMHO Very appropriate, You don't offer someone happy birthday three months after their anniversary. Nor do you commemorate ANZAC day in July. Its the same with religious holidays lest you demonstrate the Christian ignorance of all things Islam.

It is why I said in the post before yours, to reply to a merry Christmas compliment with a health and happiness you are being courteous and offering a genuine compliment instead of offering something that passed three months before.

lets just blow this thread right open.......which end of a turd is the clean end?....the "round end" or the "tapered end"?

never thought I'd ever write something like this on xmas day.....

but....I'm a skeptic and don't care for or recognise any religion.....I just enjoy making the most of any holiday

I do wish everyone a Merry /Happy Xmas though and have a Happy Holiday while you are enjoying it.....
