I had my windscreen replaced on my Disco 4 SE but now the auto rain sensing wipers don't work. Can anyone help with a fix? Does it take a special type of windscreen or is there something that just needs to be configured?

Is it a genuine windscreen? I am pretty sure the sensor is built into the glass.

Had the same problem in my lexus, needed to be genuine windshield.

I just got a new non genuine windscreen in my D4 SE and the rain sensing wipers work fine. I did make sure it was a Sun Control windscreen to replace the OEM Opticool but that is all. My insurance won't pay for a genuine windscreen but at least you can get the equivalent aftermarket windscreen.

Why don't you go back to the people who did the windscreen? You asked for them to replace your windscreen - then they should be making sure everything works after they've done their work

Could it be that they have forgotten to connect the sensor?

Gday...

Dunno if the D3 and D4 screens are the same but when I got a replacement windscreen from O'Briens in Townsville and the auto wipers did not work.

They could not find the reason why and referred it to the dealer in Townsville. They checked it out and apparently it needed a "re-install" of the software. Cost $72 (paid for by O'Briens) and it hasn't failed since.

Cheers - John

When I had my D4 windscreen replaced 'Instant Windscreens' told me there was no equivalent after market windscreen.

Peter, they told me today (Cannington) they could order me the LR one, but the Chinese ripoff worked well for two others they recently fixed.....so I guess they have an elcheapo one now.

Got a friggen big hit, two days out from our trip to Tassie.....I will get by though.

Happy Christmas mate.

As I understand things the sensor pad can be moved from one windscreen to another (very carefully), failing that you will need a new sensor pad adhered to your replacement screen.

I am on windscreen number 4 or is it 5 ??? Anyhow I have the 'elcheapo' version in the car now and it seems to stand up to the minor everyday hits better than the OEM screens I had. After four moves from windscreen to windscreen the sensor gave up the ghost and needed to be replaced.

Once the new one was fitted it all worked fine!

Hey Brett, got the camper sorted then.:) Hope you do manage to get by.

What the Midlands 'Instant' mob said is the after market D4 screens are a different colour to the genuine glass, so no direct equivalent.

Quote from Instant to replace the screen with genuine glass was a couple of hundred less than what Southern quoted for genuine and Instant sources their glass from Southern, go figger. In the end what it cost don't mean much to me - it's an insurance job and I have a $500 excess. ie same price to me whether after market 'el chepo' (~$650 I think) or genuine (~$1100) so I ask for and get genuine.

Instants in Kalgoorlie replaced mine a little while back too - they used an OEM screen and sourced it from Barbagallo.

Have a good trip over there Brett. We only got back from 8 weeks travelling over that way a few weeks ago. It's bloody warm up here in Kal at the moment.

Merry Christmas to all ....................

I had mine replaced on my D3 by Windscreens O'Brien and i had the same issue.
They had forgotten the reconnect the connector for the sensor above the rear vision mirror.:D

I refitted the fuse for the auto wipers prior to having my latest screen replacement so that I could test that the sensor was working properly before driving away. I thought I'd have another try at using auto wipers but it took only 1 lot of showers to know that I need to remove the fuse again.

Thanks John, I'll contact them tomorrow to see if I have the same success. Cheers!

Thanks, I'll see if I can figure out how to remove the cover (without breaking something!) and check the wiring

So are you saying that pulling the fuse out and putting it back in again resets it or something and gets it working again?

No, removing the fuse disables auto wipers and turns the sensitivity control into intermittent delay control.

Flexor - thanks for your original post...nice to know I'm not alone.

O'Briens replaced my screen with a non-OEM (it was an insurance job). My dealer 'reset' the wipers but this did not fix it. Have spoken to O'Briens and they are sending a guy out this Friday to take a look.

Will let you know the outcome.

BTW - the dealer told me the OEM screens come with the sensor bracket attached whereas the non-OEM screens don't have the bracket. So O'Briens need to remove the bracket and stick it onto the new screen.

O'Briens chap came out today. Found that the sensor was not fitting flush to the new screen (non-OEM screen). This creates an air bubble (visible when you look at it from the front) which mucks up the rain sensor.

The O'Briens man said a replacement screen needs to be re-fitted, and will recommend an OEM screen. What happens next is up to O'Breins, but we will see.

I know what you mean. With my original windscreen they were very slow to come on and were virtually useless. The funny thing is that they are now really good with the new after market solar control screen, although still not as good as the ones on my old VW Multivan.

Ferret, I got my windscreen at the place in Forrestfield in Dundas Rd. They sourced normal windscreens or Sun Control windscreens for the D4. The sun control was double the price but still only $550 or so. Very happy with mine so far.

I can't stand the apparently irrational timing when the wipers will operate a few times as expected then go at full speed for a few wipes. They can't be slowed enough for my liking either.

Hi, I recently had the screen replaced in my D4. This is the 4th screen we have had replaced in 4 years as our roads are pretty poor quality here. Apparantly after 2 years the insurance company would no longer pay for a genuine screen, so Windscreens Obrien used an aftermarket one instead. No real rain over the following few months, so I didn't notice that the auto wipers were not functioning. Not immediately putting 2 and 2 together, I called the Landrover dealer and asked them what they thought. They suggested re calibrating the sensor should fix it. It didn't. When I mentioned the previously installed windscreen they said that as it was non genuine this was the problem. Took it back to Obriens and they replaced it with another one. Still didn't work so we took it back to the dealer and they said it may be the sensor. They ordered a new sensor and tried it and found that it didn't fix the problem so we went back to Obriens. They replaced the screen again with a genuine one at their cost and it fixed the problem. I won't accept anything other than genuine in future.

Sorry, forgot to mention that the problem is that the mounting bracket for the sensor comes fitted to the genuine screen as opposed to the aftermarket one which was adhered to the screen on site. Any slight difference in the angle or distance from the screen will cause a problem. When the sensor stopped working the intermittent switch started to operate.

I took mine back to O'Briens and they said they needed to order a new part - quite possibly the bracket I guess. Hopefully I'll get more info on what it is when they get it fitted (my other half took the car in so she didn't really pay a lot of attention to the details...)
