View Full Version : Fitting a key to a Perentie? Anyone done it & can give a run down of how to do it?

Have been looking for a fairly obvious thread on how to replace the non-key ignition switch with a keyed version, but found nothing! I thought that anyone who bought a 110 recently would need to do this.
Anyway - I bought a set of these
Land Rover Parts - 3 BARRELS AND KEY SET ANTI BURST DOOR LOCKS SERIES 3 AND 101 F/C + 110/90 COUNTY (inc. ex-army 110) LIFT UP HANDLES (http://www.roverparts.com.au/inc/sdetail/2237) on the advice of Roverparts. I originally called them to buy a whole steering lock/key, but they suggested this as a cheaper alternative, seeing as I wasn't that fussed about the steering lock part, and really only wanted an ignition key.
However there are no instructions on how to fit them.
How do I get the old barrel thingy out, and replace it with my new keyed version?
Thanks
David

Most inspection places dont even check the ignition there is a thread I was reading it about 2 days ago but cant find it now maybe it was remlr forum. I have an ex army xt600 from mannhiem auction got it registered no keys needed:)

Series 3 barrels fit doors & ignition (as in the ad you posted).
You don't end up with a steering lock but that's no bad thing either.
AFAIR when you get the assembly out there's a screw on the non-key end that you undo to take the barrel out - probably best to have the key in the barrel when you do this.

Regency Park (The main inspection centre in SA) require the vehicle to have a key.
I got through because I took down my paperwork for the key I'd purchased online, and promised to fit the key as soon as it arrived.

I don't really care about a steering lock. It is going to live on the farm.
How do I get the old twisting bit out - so I can fit the key? Can I just lever it out? It doesn't look like there is any screw on the existing switch to undo, so I can't work out how to get that bit out so I can fit the new key.....
Maybe I should remove the shroud around the steering column and have a look once that is off.

Left field suggestion but how about fitting an engine immobiliser?
They are required in WA to get any vehicle registered. A chap I know had to get one fitted to register his Perentie and now has a pretty neat keyless start system like all the new cars are getting today. No immobiliser tag no start!
PS Any auto sparky will be able to fit one.
Cheers

Not quite.
Only vehicles newer than 25 years old need an immobiliser in WA. So '88 and earlier don't need one - which covers most perenties.
6x6 of any age do not need one.

Ta for that! It may be a grey area, as the way I read it the vehicle also has be be on historic/concessional registration to qualify. My understanding is that was why said colleague had to fit one, as he is using his daily. Transport inspector's interpretation on the day....
Still a neat way of avoiding having to fit a key ignition assembly.

The pit inspectors do not know how you will be registering your unregistered or interstate vehicle.
When I took my 110 over the pits (the first time - with no immobiliser) they checked that it was newer than 25 yo before confirming I needed an immobiliser. No mention of concessional rego was made.
The requirement in WA is the immobiliser must self arm within 3 minutes of turning off the ignition - so not sure how that would work on a perentie without a key?

I eventually worked out how to do this. For anyone else trying to do this, this photo should help:

From what I can determine, the Landrover part number for the lock barrel/key set isRTC3022.

Gday I got my Perentie over the WA pits with no key and no immobiliser. Will now put a keyed ignition and / or battery key / fuel pump switch or something to confuse would be thieves. Paul.

Having looked at your blog post, I reckon I sat in that one at Grays!
I remember the rectangular marks all over it. Some kind of residue from camo netting?

The fuel pump is purely mechanical so better off doing a battery or ignition key or an immobiliser!

My RFSV already had keyed ignition- not sure why but the army must have installed on these models only. I am curious how it works- what creates the pressure on the stop cable when turning ignition on/off?

There is a relay switched servo motor in the white bag (on the RHS firewall below the cluch m/c) connected via cable to the fuel pump.

not just a camo thing supposedly the stick on panels served to help with counter observation on IR

I was wondering what was in that white bag - i followed stop cable up to it and assumed there was something like that inside-pretty clever system.

Matt, the RFSVs had keyed (alike) ignition because we left them cached in the scrub for long periods while foot patrolling.
What many outsiders fail to comprehend is that in sparsely populated areas, the locals know each others' tyre tracks and which gates should be open.
You have MORE chance of a nosy so-an-so following sign in to see who is on their land.
The Electrical Diesel Injection Control EDIC switch is the buzz you hear when you turn the engine on or off. the beauty of it is that if it fails, you can reach in and manually cycle the system to start. A consideration for the immobilizer system.
Cheers, Dave.
