Just heard today that kombi production is to cease in Brasil ending the longest production run of a vehicle in history. It's being killed off by the same design rule changes that's killing off the defender.Having had two kombies, the last one for nearly twenty years,it is sad to see the end of them.:(Iwas a dedicated vw fan till i caught the green oval disease:p

As a piece of practical design nothing touches it, but it's demise is probably 25 years overdue ...

Yeah, probably long overdue, but a sad day. I'm quite fond of them. If I didn't have Landies I'd have one.

I had a love affair with them too :) I completely rebuilt a split screen camper in the late 1970's and eventually sold it for 500 british pounds :BigCry: Also owned a later Type 2 camper but it didn't have the same appeal as the split screen model. Of course my dormobile has a slight advantage in the rough stuff ;)
I've also got an original copy of this book which was presented to "Volkswagen Dealers" I didn't know it was worth any money :)

My first "car" was not exactly a Kombi - it was the one ton pickup with opening windscreens. Excellent offroad, except the engine did not like dust. Replaced it with a Series 1.
With a one ton load and all of 36bhp, performance was nothing to get excited about.

My future son-in-law has a neat unit sitting in his garage, just needs the inside done up. Wondering now if mechanical parts would be an issue, Bob

No, heaps of parts are available cheap from the US.
You can practically build a brand new kombi out of the spare parts that are available.

I think many of us older people progressed from a Kombi to a 4wd.
My first car was a 1960 Beetle and I bought a Kombi with my dad in the early '70's. First of the 12 volt models (type2) and fitted it out as a camper, complete with 2 way fridge (gas/240 volt) and with a half pop up roof. I took it around Aus in '75 on my first honeymoon :(
We had that for nearly 10 years and sold it for twice as much as we bought it for.

I helped a mate in Melbourne put windows in the side of his VW van in 1972 and we made the openings just a tad too small. Boy! Did that make it hard pulling the rubbers around the windows but after much lubrication (down the throat kind) we got the job done.
We had great fun, us and our 2 kids and him and his wife going to the different places they wanted to show us new arrivals to Oz.

Landy nut or not - I would give my eye teeth for a split screen Kombi

If you want even a pretty ordinary one it will cost you a hell of a lot more than eye teeth, more like your first born;)
