Greetings all,
My air intake grill fell off the other day in the driveway....tiny bloody plastic pins...glued it back on with sillastic....
Anyway I noticed that the inlet size of the air intake to the air filter was quite small I could hardly fit four fingers into the opening...quite small for a turbo diesel I am thinking, surely this small size would restrict the intake air flow...I mean my Yamaha XT660Z motorcycle has a bigger air intake.
Has anyone replaced the OEM plastic ducting with a 3" air intake duct ( I think it is 3" as a guess without measuring the air box intake)
Surely fitting a 3" intake would improve the response from the engine, don't safari snorkels come with a 3" duct to connect to the air box.
I was thinking of making a snorkel out of the ducting, having it come out of the guard, then attaching a length of 3" stainless pipe to it to fun up the outside of the windscreen pillar....why spend $500 on a plastic snorkel?

See Nugget on this forum. He makes a very good kit. I put this kit in with the LR RAI to make it airtight.

Same here, only I used a Mantec metal job on the outside.

yep, see nugget's kit, I've installed it, highly recommended. ARB have the safari snorkels at a reasonable price

I know that there are many aftermarket brand name snorkels available, however essentially they are just a bit of plastic pipe...surely a length of 3" exhaust pipe is way cheaper to basically do the same job.
I planned to replace the restrictive OEM air intake duct with a flexible 3" duct, eBay price $30,
Buy a length of 3" exhaust pipe and get then to put a 90 degree bend in it, and make a snorkel like in the picture, but fit a universal snorkel intake, $35 from e-bay....I mean why spend $450 on a length of plastic???

I agree, a nice length of 3inch stainless would look good though!

I know what you mean by the $450 pipe. I think I got mine around the $250-300 mark.... still very expensive.
