Hi All,
Any recommendation for repairers in dubbo, 5th gear rattling and waiting for NRMA.

If the other gears are OK then perhaps just don't use 5th until after the break.

I had this and just drove really carefully (with 1100kg trailer) in the lower four gears until I got home.

Google brings up Dubbo Transmisson Service 118 Darling St Dubbo 02 6882 5152 but I don't know them so can't vouch for how good they are. We had ours rebuilt by Saddleton Automatics in Coffs Harbour who did a good job. Hope that helps.

Clancy Ford Dubbo(02) 6884 9755 (http://www.clancyforddubbo.com.au/fordau/default.asp)

There is a guy there, Paul I think, who is very knowledgeable about Land Rover products.
They may still be the LR dealer in Dubbo.

MR would have sent our auto to Borg Warner in Sydney to be rebuilt, they said. Not sure about manuals though. The NRMA should know about a transmission workshop in Dubbo, surely?
Guess you might be hanging around Dubbo for a few days for the country music festival?

That's at Tamworth, and its a fair hike from Dubbo.

There is a Land Rover dealer in Dubbo, if you want to give them a try. While you are waiting, stay away from West Dubbo, even the posties refuse to deliver there.

Place up in the Hunter selling a recon R380 Land Rover R380 Gearbox Discovery 2 TD5 V8 Reconditioned Exchange Warranty | eBay (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Land-Rover-R380-Gearbox-Discovery-2-TD5-V8-Reconditioned-Exchange-Warranty-/200998078810?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2ecc6b495a&_uhb=1)

$2200 is still steep, but a bit better than $3900

ISTR that TD5 and V8 boxes have some gears different ratios.

Thanks all so far, would I also need a new clutch or is that part of the gearbox reconditioning? If I were to buy one like the eBay ad mentioned earlier? :)
Any advice what else to do whilst box out would be good.

Isn't it reasonably common for fifth gear and reverse to get a bit noisy while the rest of the gearbox is still good?

If it is caught early enough, isn't it possible that all it needs is a couple of bearings replaced? That can even be done with the gearbox still in the vehicle.

Terry at at Award diff and gearbox would have to be one of the most knowledgeable on rover gearboxes this side of the black stump.

Dubbo Transmissions overhauled my LT95 a few years back. No problems other than I scored a good quality screwdriver on top of the box!

As vnx205 commented, it may be a need for only a couple of bearings.

Hey mate.
So sorry to hear of your woes. It seems that the R380 does not like towing in 5th. I am guilty of this with our 23ft van. I am currently trying to get to the bottom of a vibration that occurs at 110km/h. I think it's gearbox related due to towing. Have you concidered an Ashcroft upgraded R380?. It has a beefed up 5th gear bearing. Aparantly the fith cog looses mesh due to a weak/worn bearing. Something to contemplate if your considering keeping the Disco as I am. Hope you get it sorted soon mate an your on your way. We stayed at the Big4 not so long ago and it's a good park close to town and walking distance of the RSL.
Regards
Robbo

You can just drop the transfer case and replace the oil pump and the 2 rear support bearings and it will do another 100-200 thousand kays it doesn't have to be expensive.
If its gone too far it will strip the gears and then you need to change them as well.
Remember Don drove his a couple of thousand kays home in 4th gear it may be better to do that and get an Ashcroft box from the UK.

Hi Robbo, do not have time to wait for the Ashcroft one, would think nrma would get cranky. The dungog supply looks closest, even hiring a ute and do a day trip from here might be possible to speed up the process. Nrma man gave me a contact to try in town and also have jdnsw option. PIA and half tempted to trade it but for what?

No consolation to you but apparently you're not alone as the BIL's previous Triton and the nephew's Pajero both did fifth gear because of towing and had to be upgraded. You might be lucky and get away with just fixing fifth rather than the whole box. Apparently its one of the reasons autos can be better for towing as the torque converter copes better than fifth in a manual, so I'm told. Might be worth getting a transmission specialist to open it up rather than just assuming you need a complete replacement. Just a thought. Has the oil filter in the gearbox been replaced recently, as they can clog up and impede the oil flow?

All Four x 4 Spares at Kotara (Newcastle) will most likely have what you need.

You often can just do 5th from the back without disturbing the rest of the box, but you would want to look in to see how much metal has travelled around inside just in case.

Mine went after 312000 km with a lot of towing, the rest of the gearbox was ok, but was fitted with new bearings as it was already apart, and the clutch was replaced even though they thought it had another 100-150,000 km left.

It was sent by my local LR guy to someone called Terry so possibly the one mentioned in an earlier post, and I had it back in three days.

Dungog can do reco gearbox, flywheel and clutch for $4000 ish.

You can fit a couple of bearings for a lot less than that. :)

So far no-one has given any details about the current box that justifies completely replacing it.

Is there something I have missed or something you are not telling us that justifies doing more than just fixing the fifth gear problem?

Yorkie
2nd January 2014, 07:44 PM
Alan, maybe it will be less but to be honest I would rather someone that knows what they are doing can work on it, dubbo is closed until Monday and I can have the car in a workshop by then being worked on, maybe I can get away with only bearings, will see. 1st to 4th is quiet and I have reverse so may not be so bad, will see.

From memory the R380 had an oil feed problem on 5th gear and the output shaft, the ashcroftfix and later the Landrover fix was to cross drill the gear so that oil could reach the shaft, as it would wear the shaft splines ;)

Most of these gearboxes were rectified while the vehicles were under warranty in UK but maybe not in Aust.

Spoke to him, alone at work and unable to assist, diff and gears also closed til monday, nrma mech I was given also suggested nothing available to be done until Monday and they would only source a recon box from syd/mel. ;)

Just out of curiosity mate, what symptom did you arrive at that 5th gear is rattling and at fault?
Only asking because a bad front prop shaft can play this same game in filth gear when in resonance

I got a new Ashcrofts R380 outright, with heavy duty bearing mod, plus new DMF & Clutch kit delivered to Sydney in 10 days flat, and the lot was about the same cost as just getting the R380 reconditioned locally.

Really the best option if you intend to do a lot of towing.

When I got mine done, Ashcrofts said they couldn't start one for me for about five days, then add time for shipping etc. My three options were exchange box from the Hunter, local reco of my box or Ashcrofts. All worked at almost the same price, but I needed it superquick, so went for the local reco. The 10 days you got, GoingBush, might have been when all the planets aligned and they had one in stock, when I asked they had none hence the wait.

Speaking to modern motors dungog they know ashcrofts well and are supplying an equivalent reco box to what you would get from ashcroft, booked in for Monday unless I trade it over the weekend.

Is the box from Dungog a modified example or is it just a reco?. You know you want to keep the Disco!!. Maybe fit a good second hand box (or fix yours) and wait for an Ashcroft box? I know it's only a matter of time for me to be in the same boat. Word of warning on the Triton. Compared to the D2, there a dud to drive and have a weak chassis prone to cracking.

Dungog is the one mentioned earlier in the thread, modified, and as said they know ashcrofts and have even visited them, also being an aulro supporter I am happy to take their word on this. :)

Just drove the triton, nice but not as solid and only offered $3k trade! Disco will remain.
