The Disco has given me something else to do this weekend.
The belt has broken.
Haynes Manual seems to be clear ("as the Great Bog of Cloone" (this for is you Antaine style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif)) and I am an avid reader of Science Fiction.
No mention of special tools or tricks.
Any clues?

If its a series 1 3.5v8 I can help!if you havent already changed it.
On mine I can get the belt on without taking of the fan. You just
have to wind it on over the blades one by one till its on.
Then loosen the idler pulley. I use one socket extention
to do the bugger up on the battery side. The belt Im using
is a Dayco 13a1000 = 12.5mm wide and 1m around. You could go
to a smaller section because mine sits proud of the A/C pulley.
anyway happy tinkering! 8)

Thanks Discowhite.
The 300 tdi is different in configuration to the V8.
But it can't be rocket science after all Land Rover built it.
I'm a bit peed off because the Timing belt was changed 10000 km ago. together with instructions to check other bits and I would have thought that while they were at it.... style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif

Belt changed.
Although Haynes suggests removing the viscous fan (you need a very thin 32mm spanner to do this) it is possible to remove and replace the main belt (first) and then the AC belt with the fan left in place. Its a bit of a fiddle to get them past the fan but it can be done.
An extra pair of hands helps in positioning the belts and retensioning the AC belt.
The tensioner bolts (3 off) are only 10mm and soft so be careful not to round them off.
The only complication of the day was the discovery (no pun intended) that when the original AC belt slipped off whilst I was driving it severed the power cable to the compressor's magnetic clutch very close to the connection to the compressor. 8O Fortunately there was sufficient length (20mm) to reconnect by way of soldering and reinsulating. This involved taking off the compressor pully and magnet. Circlip tool required but not too hard.
Cost of the exercise: Belt $17.00 style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif Beer $14.00
