SBS have a half hour "summary" - which is a bare bones thing focused on the non-private participants and their advertising - at 1730 each day.

Me too. I have been following the Dakar for as long as I can remember.
This is the official site, and has daily videos - pretty much what you will see on TV coverage. Official website of the Dakar rally raid (http://www.dakar.com/index_DAKus.html)

Ah yes the Dakar which doesn't go to Dakar. Hey it's not even on the same continent as Dakar. Not even in the same hemispehere as Dakar.
It was the Paris-Dakar Rally.
Then the Dakar Rally.
Maybe now it ought to just be called The Rally. ?

Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, not the original Dakar, it could be argued not Dakar at all, but still a great race. With such a reputation, support vehicles get street cred by merely following the pack [ VW Amorak, anyone?] And , what's not to like about a country with the motto " by reason or by force". [ Chile } How it all started;
AN ENDURING CHALLENGE
The adventure began back in 1977, when Thierry Sabine got lost on his motorbike in the Libyan desert during the Abidjan-Nice Rally. Saved from the sands in extremis, he returned to France still in thrall to this landscape and promising himself he would share his fascination with as many people as possible. He proceeded to come up with a route starting in Europe, continuing to Algiers and crossing Agadez before eventually finishing at Dakar. The founder coined a motto for his inspiration: "A challenge for those who go. A dream for those who stay behind." Courtesy of his great conviction and that modicum of madness peculiar to all great ideas, the plan quickly became a reality. Since then, the Paris-Dakar, a unique event sparked by the spirit of adventure, open to all riders and carrying a message of friendship between all men, has never failed to challenge, surprise and excite. Over the course of almost thirty years, it has generated innumerable sporting and human stories.

Have quite a few good friends that do it every year and entry and GPS that you need ( have to have two and have to be the ones they tell you to have ) don't get a lot of change out of £55,000. ($100,000)
Then have to buy fuel from Dakar rally group at about £3 ($5.50) a ltr and have to tell them how much you need for the whole rally. And pay for it all up front. If you crash and burn in the first stage. Don't get a refund on the other fuel not used, Tough.
Then space in the service truck is by weight , need a few diffs with you and you know what they weigh , that works out bloody expensive with all the tools and bits you need.
Then you have to pay to get the truck there and the pay to get the truck back. If there's anything left of it.
If your truck breaks done on the course and they have to take it back to camp for you, will make recovery on Fraser Island look bloody cheap.
Plus hotels and all the other stuff that goes along with it and you can imaging that hotels are three times the price as normal at the start finish.
And all this does not include the cost of the car you are going to race. And all that FIA regulation stuff is not cheap.
So really is a big boys and their toys race.

Eurosport's covering it in Britain.
Last year we got two live broadcasts a day, ¾ hour and ½ hour followed later by a ¾ hour summary.
This year we've got a half hour recorded broadcast, most of which is people talking rather than rally action. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2014/02/963.jpg

Cars manly but also trucks
Cars due to knowing quite a few of the drivers that do it and always looking out for them, see today that Gottie is out which is a shame.
Not a bike person but respect the effort to do it on a bike. Personally prefer a full metal jacket around me when I drive.

Im a bit impressed that Minis are 1 2 and 3 at this stage, I didn't even know you could buy a 4WD Mini , just looked at the specs of the Mini Countryman ALL4 , they even have diff lock. I normally just follow the trucks, now watching the Minis with interest.

There's not much "Mini" in those Dakar Mini's!

These were all taken at the 2011 Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge, but the current ones would be somewhat similar I'd guess.

With 12 minis entered their is no wonder that they are running 1,2,3.

The 3 Aussie riders that finished were 50 minutes within each other.
They placed 37,38,39. That is a great result :)
