I want to check the oil levels in my ex-army 110 with a 4 speed LT95 gearbox/transfer case.
Are the level check holes "A" in both of these pictures?

A on both. Mines got a dipstick in it, but I fill it until I get oil out that filler plug. I don't think mine has go that Plug 'B' on the gearbox, just the drain and one fill.
With an OD bolted to the back of the TC, that plug is hard to get to, but no probs on yours.

Excellent. That was an educated guess on my part, but thought I'd better check with the brains trust before I started undoing things and adding oil.
The TC seems to have a slight weep, with drops of oil forming on the 4 bolt heads at the bottom of the TC side-plate (just below "B" in my TC picture). It seems to be leaking past the blue gloop on that flat side-plate.
It doesn't lose a lot (just spots on the driveway), but am off on a jaunt this weekend which will be 3 or 4 hundred Kms, and thought I'd better check before I leave.
Thanks Bacicat

"B" is the drain plug on the transfer same as a on a Series. and "A" is the fill level.Dextron 2 from memory as Dex 3 is a little thin, and if noisy I have been told VMX80 is the stuff to use.
It works with noisy LT77's too

I don't think I'll have time to get any VMX-80 tomorrow, so am just planning to use engine oil.
Long term - it sounds like VMX-80 is the best option though.

In that case may I suggest "Penrite" 20w50 everyday driving, a full mineral oil, Repco stock it.:)

"C" in pic #1 is the drain for the gearbox. Has a plastic cage inside that pulls out. Pull it out and look for obstructions behind when you change the oil......... broken reverse selector springs end up there and block the flow.

I've only got some Penrite Diesel 5W-40 in the shed. If it's (say) half a litre short, is it OK to use this until I get my hands on some VMX-80?

Yup! :)
If that is an ex-army vehicle then it would probably have an LT95A gearbox (A=taper rollers between Box and Transfer), Blknight.aus would be able to confirm this , as it has been a while since I have had anything to do with gearboxes in Perenties or Izusu 110's ;)

Also.......... don't undo 'B' in pic #1. Has something to do with reverse and has been safety wired on a couple of LT 95's I've come across.

Actually, there is a bolt directly above "A" in the first photo that is wired (you can only just see it in the photo)...

Yes, that is the one not to touch. "B" is the magnet which you should remove at every service and check for filings/bits of metal. You can fix up those weeping bolts with a remove/clean and apply a bit of sealant.

Thanks for clarifying that Brian.
Haven't touched a LT 95 gearbox for quite some time now. I only have a LT 95 TC left behind a C9.

Don't waste your money on VMX in an LT95 I found it to be too thin.
The original engine oil is best in mine although VMX did have better shift characteristics when cold.
I wasted heaps of money trying to find a better oil for my LT95 but settled on 20w 50 engine oils like Land Rover said.

Thanks for that info.
I was drawn to the VMX-80 due to it promising to reduce the "gearbox rattle" when hot.
Mine is quiet as anything with the clutch out in neutral when it is cold, but it rattles a lot when hot. Would very much like it to be quiet when hot.

The oil doesn't last long Rick could tell us what its doing but its like it gets tired quickly.
I tend to change it every second oil change.
I just use Castrol GTX 2 20/50 pretty cheap and you can buy it anywhere

So, do you think just an oil change to GTX2 or RX Super or whatever, will quieten it down a bit?
From the Army logs, the last service I can see is October 2010, but it has only done 500Kms since then. That's about 125 Kms per year!!

Dont know what will happen in your situation but a LT95 in good condition isn't overly noisy although they can be noisy for a loooonnnnnggg time before they will fail.
Pretty well anything short of a cracked casing is a mere flesh wound
Mine have always been on V8s not Isuzus so maybe I am wrong.

Think that's an Isuzu trait.. Every Land Rover with a big 4 pot diesel that I've driven does exactly that. The big Nissan 3.5 t in a friends 110 used to do exactly the same after a decent run! :)

Then there is the famous Haymes quote, right at the very end of the LT 95 gearbox / TC section which had already covered complete removal & reco of same:
‘Note: It is sometimes difficult to decide whether it is worthwhile removing and dismantling the gearbox for a fault which may be nothing more than a minor irritant. Gearboxes which howl, or where the syncromesh is worn but double declutching can overcome the problem, may continue to perform for a long time in this stage. A worn gearbox usually needs a complete rebuild to eliminate noise because the various gears, if re-aligned on new bearings, will continue to howl when different wearing surfaces are presented to each other.
The decision to overhaul therefore, must be considered with regard to time and money available, relative to the degree of noise or malfunction that the driver can tolerate.’
You'd think they'd have put that at the front!
In my experience all the bits of the handbrake linkage (including the button in the handle) vibrating about make as much noise as my old gearbox did. Now I just have that nice quiet 70's C9 whine.

The plug marked "B" on the gearbox is a magnetic plug. See the EMEI "light grade repair"
