I'm also after a decent hydraulic bottle jack to replace the crappy 'wind up' cylinder type jack that came in my Defender.

Anyone have any advice for us ?

How about the local Landrover wreckers? Discos come with a bottle jack that (presumably) isn't made in China. Get one out of a wreck and you'll have the authentic thing. 8)

Wreckers or have a look around the swap meets.

Try and find one of the old tuff ones that can have the seals and oil replaced rather than a sealed unit.

Hi
Instead of,actually as well as a jack, I carry a small barby plate, trolley jack(they dont work on dirt) and a block of wood, real easy to use, takes up a bit more space/weight.

Yeah I use a Trolley Jack and hard plate as well. Its got a 2500kg rating, and raises up to 500mm.
I've just found that I end up having to put about a foot high of wood blocks under the landrover with the bottle jack on top to even come close to getting it under the chassis! Civilian Landrovers don't have to sweat is quite as much thankfully.

My next investment will be an exhaust jack, cause I've been caught out in the past where no jack will fit under the 4X4 cause she is sitting flatbed on sand. I'll write up the story in the appropriate forum soon.

Call me naieve, but isn't the jack supposed to go under the sispension leaves on a series landy (ie, directly under the axle) ???

Not always practical I know, but it is sure closer to the ground.

Phoenix - refering to my story about having my back axle completely submerged in sand.... where else am I going to put the jack?

Yes it is attributed to the circumstances about positioning, but every time I have ever needed it... the chassis at the front has been used just behind the front springs, and in the back - there really isn't anywhere to put it to be honest, as the chassis as you know rises up away from the axle.

Thats why I like the concept of the exhaust jack as well in digging enough space to slide the bag underneath to just give you that little bit more lift to get a standard jack in there to do the work.

Gets down to trial and error a lot of the time in my adventures style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif

Adam

please dont get under the vehicle with jack only - buy a good set of axle stands and use all three - that means you at least have a sort of safety net-
id hate for you to have an accident.

also whey you jack her up if you have a wheel off place it under the lowest part of the vehicle - all these things might help save a potentally fatal incident

The one in my Disco is made in Italy. Why not think outside the square and stay away from those auto accessory shops that are only full of poor quality **** at a high quality price!

Have a look through the yellow pages for a truck accessory mob or better still a specialist jack supplier. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif

EAGLE SMF in Sydney can supply jacks - i used to work for them - they also sell everything one needs in a tyre shop including evey type of tyre repair consumable you could need in your kit.

http://www.aulro.com/modules.php?name=Foru...iewtopic&t=1251 (http://www.aulro.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=1251)

They are situated on Orange Grove, Liverpool . They are more a wholesaler - but they are a family buisness and pride themselves on quality product.

Things I would buy from them for my vehicle :

Airline hose and clips - connectors - all types available

Maruni "string" puncture repair kits (similar to the much raved about safety seal - except they vulcanise in, whcih means they seal the hole with vulcanising cement - compound sealing the hole into the steel belt preventing rust in the belt and subsequent delamination (seperation) of the belt)

Various types of workshop jacks - form chinese brand trolley jacks used in tyre shops to quality Italian made bottle to pneumatic workshop numbers .

I highly recommend them

Try this one on for size - I have seen a vehicle jacked out of axle deep mud using a bottle jack.

How ? Im glad you asked . The bloke found a good solid bit of wood, and angled the bottle jack to the top of the wheel rim (only do this with steel rims) he then jacked very carefully the wheel enough to get stuff under the tyre ....once this was done he did it aqain- within 10 minutes he had one side completely up and out of the stuff -

so there ya go keep that one up yer sleeve
