View Full Version : Cruise control for an Isuzu??

I know its being soft, and has no place in a agricultural Landy, but has anyone successfully fitted cruise control to their Isuzu?
I'm finding on longer straight/flat road transit trips that I'm getting some numbness in my right foot/lower leg. Once it starts, even taking a break doesn't make it go away for long, and there's not enough room in the 110 footwell to swap feet ;)
Cruise would let me move my RH foot round a bit.....
I recall seeing a VDO one on a County at one of the past "Defender Days" in Melbourne. Seemed to be about the same vintage as the vehicle but I'm guessing there is probably a simple and reliable aftermarket system that will work with the cable throttle.

Not a Landy but I fitted a cruise control to a rodeo diesel using vacuum from the brake vac pump. No real issues at all. Same type as this one (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/AP60-Cruise-Control-with-optional-clutch-switch-DIY-/150764716337?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item231a470131).

Thanks - that looks pretty simple.

I have at times used the hand throttle in my IIA as cruise control. Never on a public road of course...

No hand throttle unfortunately, and I can't reach down far enough to use the block of wood I normally use as high idle for my endless air

Do you know what the difference is between that and the AP60 that Bee Utey mentioned earlier (apart from the price difference AP60 ~$230 and AP300 ~$450 on ebay).
Only thing I can find is that the AP300 will take inputs from electronic speedo transducers. Both are vacuum actuated.

I picked up the 300 on special with some other stuff. I was originally looking at the 60 as I was only after a basic CC and was led to believe the 60 was being dropped.
I have had my 300 for nearly a year and have not even opened the box yet. ( to many other projects ) , so I cannot recalled the differences.

I have had a Command Cruise on mine for about fifteen years. Only problem was when the excess lead to the speed pickup (at the gearbox crossmember on the front prop shaft) got hooked in the U-Joint.
The control unit is mounted just below the lip of the dash padding and just to the left of the LH heater control.

I believe the AP300 has lots of adjustability for speed control sensitivity and the type/rate of speed input. They are supposed to be fitted to vehicles with electronic speedo sensors. This means there is no need for losable magnets or pickups under the vehicle. I remember fitting one many years ago. The AP60 is entirely adequate when used with the supplied pickup though, you just need to mount the pickup to the transfer case so that flexing of mounts etc doesn't cause contact with the magnet on the drive shaft.

I was thinking of putting the pickup bracket on the transfer with the magnets on the front shaft.
Read a couple of posts on another (non LR) forum about using rare earth magnets as they have a stronger field and still work OK a bit further away. One of the AP60 sellers on ebay supplies them free to be epoxied onto the shaft.
In saying that, I have a Td5 speedo here, so might be easier to just use a controller that will handle the electronic signal from that transducer....
Project creep.... :cool::cool:

I have the magnets wired to the prop shaft with the pickup about an inch away on a bracket to the side, held under one of the bolts securing the crossmember.

Steve, I have an AP60 (I think it's a 60) kit in the shed which I intend to fit one day. If you want to have a closer look at one pre-purchase you're welcome to check it out.
Cheers, Murray
