View Full Version : Flywheel housing bolt?

Hi all, crawling around beginning the basic maintenance on my new disco.
While under there I have noticed that there is a bolt missing around the back of motor/gbox.
From what I can find out, it looks to be a 'wading plug'.

Just wanting to double check that this is correct.

Will get it fitted asap, but it is not an essential unless Im doing water/mud correct??

correct.

I usually carry a handfull of hyrdraulic line blanking plugs if Im going near water on a trip, lots of people forget them right up untill the front wheels touch the water.

Pardon my ignorance, but why wouldnt these be plugged all the time?

so you get visible evidence of leaks from the clutch SC the rear main and the gearbox input seal.

The plug hole allows any oil that has leaked from the engines rear main seal or gearbox imput seal to drain out, to prevent clutch contamination and as a visual indicator. This shouldn't be happening unless one of these seals have failed. The plug should be installed when wading and removed afterwoods as per the manual. I leave mine in all the time and check at servicing time. They should be in the little tool roll in the car, if not you can buy some hydraulic blank, it's probably 1/4 BSP from memory similar to the plugs in the swivel hubs. Some landies have a little tab welded to the chassis where the plug can be stored. There is an additional plug for the timing belt casing if I'm not mistaken.

Exact same plugs for the Timing housing wading plug as well. Mine both stay out unless going wading! Kept in the glove box!
