View Full Version : New Defender Purchase...Security Card?

We took delivery of our new Defender around a month ago, & as I was reading through the manual recently, I noticed that it made mention of a "Security Card", which contains details of the vehicle's emergency key access code (EKA), radio s/n & key details etc.
I never got one. Should I have? What about you other new Defender owners..did you get one?
Cheers, Pickles.

Funnily enough, I just read the same section of the manual a couple of weeks ago. Called into Blacklocks in Wodonga where we bought it and asked them for the magic numbers, now waiting on a email from them with the details.

Correct me if I am wrong.
I always thought it is stamped on the silver plate in the key ring

I picked mine up in July and noticed I didn't get one then either.
The salesperson told me it was the number on the key, however I was told by the service advisor that the number on the silver tag is to reorder the key or remote (I'd guess more likely the remote).
I will be asking the advisor about it when I get the next/first service done.

The number on the silver tag is not the EKA code. That's the number you need to order a new key + fob I believe.
The EKA code is a four digit code used to start the car in an emergency when the fob is lost or has a flat battery etc. and you have the key. It might also be handy in the Wallan services (http://www.aulro.com/afvb/90-110-130-defender-county/120574-static-electricity-puma-immobilised.html) type scenario were the fob can't talk to the ECU.

It's a pull out section in your manual - ypu can get the numbers off the dealer and fill it out yourself.

the details should be on page 4 of the Online service history &Warranty and benefits booklet...my EKA and Radio security code was not completed by the dealer...just sent the dealer a quick e-mail...
The EKA code appears to be important after reading the manual more carefully.

No worries, yes I know I can do that.
But I am a stickler for stuff being "correct", and the manual specifically refers to a separate "Security Card" which is to be (for obvious reasons) kept separate from the vehicle. I never received such a "card". Did anyone else?
I've received "security cards" for many other new vehicles we've bought, the last 3 Holdens all had them as part of the car's "documentation" supplied with the car.
It's normally a little card around the size of a business card.
Thanks, Pickles.

Yep, like I said its a pull out part of your owners documentation (a little perforated card) that needs to be filled in - have you looked through your blue folder? They're in there in a bunch of different languages.

Hi, just took delivery (they even delivered it to Sydney!) of a new 130CC and no card or EKA code--have asked Dubbo Land Rover for it. My son has also ordered a new 110 from them so will make sure we get it then too in Feb when it arrives. Great service too by the way and very very good pricing -like many thousands cheaper than certain Sydney dealers.

They do good service work too and no dramas with warranty claims either - I used them once on the way back from WA.

EKA as far as I recall + Emergency Key Access.
Input the key code as a combination code into the ign will enable the vehicle to be started (if it will crank) if for whatever the reason the fob does not enable the ECU.
Dealers! EKAs are applicable across the range from Vogues to 90s.
Had plenty of practice with my D2 in the early years when all the shops (chemists and banks) burglar alarms would jam the radio key :(
My SVX is along lines of:
Remove fob from keyring
unlock drivers door and enter
insert key and move to position II ( the number of times indicated by the first no. of combination) until horn sounds.
Open and close driver's door
Repeat for each other code (combination) number.
If you get it right alarm light will extinguish
If wrong the horn will sound twice
You will only get three goes. then you will need to wait 30 mins before attempting again.
Recommend that you do it for practice as a spare time activity :) before you absolutely must have to do it with the horn barping and carrying on, rain peeing down and the Mrs and kids going off.
SODS Law says you will not have a disabled ECU on a fine sunny day when you are all by yourself and have plenty of time to nut out!

When I bought my new 110 in Nov 2012 it didn't come with a EAK code but did come with radio code on a separate card.
I hassled the dealer for the EAK code which they had to get from Australia.
A week later I got an email back with the EAK code, the radio code and the key number.

So you didn't get an owners manual, service handbook, QuickStart guide, etc?
Seems a little odd - mine (and heaps of others I've seen) came with these books in a little folder - in amongst all that crap there was a sheet of 'cards' that could be pushed out (nothing flash, only bits of paper).
Regardless, there's no point getting hung up on the actual card - they are blank and don't have the numbers you need on them, you'll need to hassle your dealer/LRA to get the info.

I got all the stuff you mentioned in the 1st para, which simply came in it's Landrover Wallet....but no "cards"........and it appears that others have not seen them (cards) either.
I had it in mind to contact my dealer, but didn't want to do that until I discovered whether others received the card,...and it appears that most didn't!
When I've spoken to them, I'll report back.

Agree with Lagerfan. I believe there is a 4 digit radio code, 4 digit ignition code and a 4 digit Immobilisation EKA code - this latter is not the code on your key.The EKA code is accessed through your LR dealer and is determined by the last 6 digits of your VIN #. If you call your dealer they can quickly look this up on the computer and tell you what the EKA code is - they did for me anyway... :)

As n plus one and still smiling have said. Paper card in blue wallet, and you fill out the card by requesting info. from dealer. That's what Blacklocks Albury did for me.

Did recall that on my D2 the original EKA code didn't work. After D2 arrived back at Dealer on a truck and they interrogated the ECU the printed and LRA code had one incorrect digit. Another reason to try it out, or get the dealer to interrogate the ECu for the code rather than getting it off of the LRA computer.

Ha! I just learnt about the EKA the hard way and at the worst possible time! My fob battery went flat at 10 pm at night, on Good Friday in the main street of the town of MacLean, up on the NSW North Coast. Of course I hadn't read that bit in the owners manual - which was in the car anyway. Fob didn't work and tried to use the key to open the car and the alarm goes off. I tried to start the engine and of course the immobiliser kicks in. Still didn't think to read the LR owners manual and end up catching a cab back to my lodgings at the Yamba Caravan park. Get a cab back next morning and ring the 24 hr LR Assist line - actually they were quite helpful and within the hour, an auto electrician from Yamba arrives and this time with the help of the manual, and the EKA code which was stapled to the back page of one of the booklets in the leather folder, we finally get it all sorted and the engine running. Did I mention that I bought a new battery and installed it in the fob back in Yamba? Not actually sitting inside the 90 like it says to do in the book!
A bit older and a bit wiser now. However, still think having an alarm system is just plain stupid - one more thing that can go wrong and usually at the worst possible time.
cheers

I imagine EKA is pronounced EEK when needed:D
Can the immobilized function be removed from the ECU ?

Hi All,
do the latest cars ( eg late MY13 and MY14's)have these codes as I asked my dealer and he said no--the radio certainly does not need one as I have had the battery disconnected and the radio re programmed itself automatically. I had asked specifically about the EKA code as well.

(MY '13 90) Radio does not need one.
I didn't receive a security card, & I'm still to learn what my EKA code is.
