HI Guys

I have had my 11a running around now for most of the summer and is great. The only problem I have is when I decelerate or coast down a hill I get the loud vibrating noise from somewhere around the rear. I have checked the propshaft and that seems OK. For the life of me a cant find what it is. Its loud enough to here clearly in an open cab without the roof on so it is quite loud. I thought it might be the thrust bearing in the gearbox but it does not seem to originate from that area. It almost sound as if something is vibrating when I coast.
Any ideas its the only thing keeping me from going offroad now.

Bit hard to diagnose a noise via a text message, but check that the exhaust system is not hitting the chassis or body somewhere when the engine moves due to engine braking, and also check that the handbrake is not dragging (hot after use is a good method, but don't burn your hand!).

Another possibility is a U-joint on the way out, but I can't see this only on the overrun.

Ten years or so back we had a swb 2a with the same problem -well it sounds as if its exactly the same thing. Never caused a drama, just a nuisance; the consensus from a few LR clubers was an unbalanced rear prop as I remember.

Take the rear prop off and drive in front wheel drive to see if noise is still there,
