Like it says been a long term owner of a 95
300tdi. Gonna be getting myself a tdv6 d3 next week.
Been trawling through this forum. Just want to know the best
Diagnostic tool to get for the D3 and read in a post today about Gordon's
Terrain response book? Can someone please enlighten me.
Gonna miss the D1 but I reckon I'll get over it pretty quick with
D3 ownership! Thanks

I don't think you will be disappointed.
I bought a hawkeye and am happy with it so far, I know that the fault mate does more, but for what I need hawkeye was right price and right tool for me.

Enjoy the permagrin.

Cheers Ean

GOE booklet is well worth it - I keep mine in the glovebox:

Green Oval Experience Land Rover 4WD, Range Rover off-road Australia (http://www.greenovalexperience.com/#!product/prd2/1041448864/goe-offroad-companion-booklet)

Congrats, It'll be like landing on the moon after the D1! The change from D2 to D3 was dramatic enough.

I bought a vcm off ebay and just use that as and when required, I don't feel the need to carry it around with me as I don't get that far off the beaten track TBH. The JLR VDS software isn't exactly user friendly but I've managed a few software updates and diagnosed some stuff and it was a lot cheaper than a hawkeye etc.

GOE booklet is very good, at the risk of being beaten around I would suggest very quietly that it is a little overpriced. But it is a very useful reference. Mine is also in the glovebox.

To be fair, I'm only producing small volumes, and it's a bit cheaper now it's moved to a different format (and printer). And of course there is now an AULRO discount, if you ask :)

I didn't think it was that expensive and will be
Ordering a copy in the next fortnight

ade - I was feeling the same way moving from a D1 to a D3. so I solved the problem by keeping the D1. I love my D3, but the D1 is my "buddy" and has got me into and out of a lot of difficult places. Like a pet dog, you can't just let it go! :-)

What is the AULRO discount? 😊

The single most important thing to remember when going off road in the D3 is to turn DSC off.

Learnt this the hard way by being bogged where a Freelander kept going.

The next thing is to engage low range more often than you would in your D1, this allows the air suspension to cross link giving you more suspension travel & simulating beam axles.

Tyre pressures are also important in such a heavy vehicle as lowering pressures increases footprint thus spreading the load.

I'm thinking of updating to a D3 in the next 12 months or so. Is there a year model in the D3s I should be looking at ? Older will be cheaper of course, but is there a model update that was a improvement. As in 2003 for D2 which got the centre diff lock.

There are a lot of variables but I went for a post '07 model as I had read that they sorted out a lot of the computer problems by then - and so far mine has been very well behaved...

Is it a MY07 model? If so, check the brake and HPFP recalls were completed - or your opinion will change! ;)

Ade - your D3 will have a "7" as the 10th character of the VIN if it is a MY07 - which came with updated EURO4 motor, one-touch front windows, etc. If it is a "6" it is a EURO3 motor. They started making the MY07 in late August 2006, IIRC.

Brake recall: Land Rover (http://www.recalls.gov.au/content/index.phtml/itemId/989275)

HPFP recall: Land Rover (http://www.recalls.gov.au/content/index.phtml/itemId/997270)

Dealers will fix these for free - if they haven't been done.

Pretty sure you can enter your VIN in Topix to check if they were completed.
Cheers,
Rob

Why do disco owners need a diagnostic tool, and what is a DSC, and where do I find it?

Diagnostic tool required, because there are so many electronics on the D3/4 that it is just as important as a spanner or screwdriver if you have any intention of not relying 100% on a dealer or indie.

Dynamic Stability Control. Electronic trickery to stop you ending up in a hedge. Button to disable is on the dash, above the stereo, next to the hazard light switch.

I've got a cigarette lighter in the lower right side of
The front dash below the radio then another twelve volt
Outlet on the left below the radio but the left one doesn't
Seem to have power when I plug in my phone??
What's this one for?

Mine is an TDv6 My07, and is for sale!
Oh and thanks Rob, the recall actions have been completed :) - Vin is in the for-sale section for reference on Topix.

Oh and Rob, I am going to get into a white D4 later in the year, or when the D3 sells.

Cheers,
Ben

Should have power. Get the meter on it to check for voltage.

Plus power to power sockets stays on for 2 minutes after doors are closed.

Also be careful to replace the covers - as 5c pieces fit nicely into those sockets, and blow the fuse!

Are the factory sockets all on have same fuse?
