There seems to be some good buying to be had at the moment with the Warn 4.6HP winches like the XD9000. This may be because of competition from their lower end Magnum series and the introduction of their latest 2003/2004 model winches which feature the new 6.5HP motors.

So right now, if you buy an XD9000, you get a free Warn recovery bag thrown in. Not some cheapie marketing promotion bag with Warn labels on it, but a genuine made in the USA bag with genuine Warn bits in it, e.g. Warn leather gloves, Warn snatch block, etc. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif

My question is - is the XD9000 winch intrinsically a good one or something that will become problematic later down the track?

I have only had a electric winch for 6 months or so, Warn 9000, and it has been used about 4-5 times. I have no problem with it.

Fitting it to a defender was a bit of a challenge as the battery cables supplied had to be replaced due to the defenders battery box being under the front passanger seat.

I WARN you, it's still not cheap.... style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif

Ok, sorry.

What sort of price are you seeing offered ?

You can pick up an XD9000 with the WARN genuine recovery bag for around $1600.

Or the winch without the recovery bag for around $1300.

Which is pretty good buying, really.

On Friday 30/4 I was at ARB Moorebank and they have the Magnum 4000kg Electric winch on special at $1030.00. The gentleman behind the counter, told me that they are the old Warn 9000 winch rebadged. Has anybody had any experience with the Magnum 4000kg, on a Defender or any other vehicle of the similar size.

Don't dicount other brands such as Premier Winch. Same power but with extra cable and the brake is external to the drum. The new synthetic ropes can be used as the brake heat is will not destroy the rope. I bought one locally for $1300 new. Maybe you can do better in the big smokewith a bit of the old style bargaining.

Hi Mike,

There was a recent winch test on one of the 4x4 magazines, and the Magnum 4000 was compared with a bunch of other winches. They tested these winches to their rated capacity, and the article said that the Magnum winch motor started to smoke a little at the maximum rated pull. Whether this is a put-off for you or not, I don't know, but for me it was enough to look elsewhere.

You know what they say - when the smokes comes out, the equipment stops!

The thing that I do not like about the Magnum is that the freespool "lever" is just a knob which is quite small and difficult to turn, especially if you've got big hands and happen to be wearing a glove.

Thanks all for the info
I will look back over my old 4X4 mags for the tests on winches. Looks like I will go with the warn winch at this stage.
