View Full Version : 2012 Defender Engine Amber light stranded me.

Currently sitting on the side of the road after my 2012 110 amber engine light came on. Pushed on for a bit after finding nothing obvious hoping for it to clear itself but no luck as this time it lost power and I'm guessing went into limp mode. Wouldn't be so ****ed if not for the fact I have my wife and 2 children in the car on our way to the Blue Mountains for 3 days and the accommodation we bookedand paid won't reimburse or allow re booking for later date. Only have 13000 kms on the clock and despite knowing all that happens with the Defender you don't want it to happen at a time like this. Checking out the price of Land Cruisers to keep myself entertained till the tow truck comes. I'm sure that novelty will get boring after a half hour.d

Oh no, I feel for you guys, I'm sure LandRover assist will fix the issue. Turbo hose?
GOOD LUCK, Pickles..

I didn't hear anything as we were at full noise on the freeway. Looked all around the hoses and couldn't see any problems as this was my initial thought. Where does the does the hose generally rub??

the bottom hose rubs on the steering - zip tie up out of the way works. They also de-laminate so look OK on the out side but the inside layer closes like a flap valve. Sometimes if you turn it off, keys out and back on again it clears the code for long enough to drive to a better stop - can do this I think up to 3 times before limp mode depending on the problem - did this with mine when the bottom hose rubbed through (didn't know it was the hose at the time or would have gaffer taped it). Good luck. Can also be the MAF sensor - RAA or equivalent would have cleaner on board so could pull the sensor, spray it clean and re-install.

My engine light came on yesterday the assist guy took an hour to arrive and check the codes . Mass airflow meter connection had moisture in it after a wash to get the salt and sand out. Still having problems with the aircon fuse blowing but these are not linked.

Hi,
do NOT wash Pumas is my advice--twice my son's 2.4 90 was flat topped (out of warranty) due to my pressure washing the engine and both times it resulted in various sensors dying--and took a while for specialists to diagnose as no faults would show. Hope the 2.2 are better but I will not be so keen on sparkling engine bay etc.

My 2013 model did that at about 1,500k's old. Intercooler hose as mentioned above. There is a official modification for this now, using a special bracket to hold the intercooler hose. I wonder if the Roadside assitence crew can change the hose at the roadside. You "might" be able to cut out the holed section and use a short length of steel pipe in the gap, or if it's rubbed close to the end - then cut and shorten the hose....

Rescue tape should hold a holed turbo hose - there's bugger all pressure there...

The only option roadside assist gave me was a tow truck. I was annoyed also that to tow truck company took it to a holding bay and not to Land Rover despite the dealership being open. Have to wait till Monday before it gets back to Newcastle. God pray nothing like this happens when doing a bit of remote 4wding out bush. It must really dampen other peoples day having to tow people out because of a breakdown.

Tried that twice when mine rubbed through, once whilst in the engine bay, second removing the hose to get a better fit. Both times unsuccessful, and all I could do was try to drive with a light foot, and the higher the gear the lighter the foot.

Max speed was 80kmh, it was just like driving a series rover again.

Mine happened between Roma and Injune, Land Rover Assist got someone there still and I had a tool to reset the fault code.

Hope yours works out for you.

Hmmm, that's disappointing - I would have expected it to hold better than that.

At least it looks like you can still limp to somewhere using the tape.

I'm down at Austral Motors now they fitted me in without a booking even though very busy. Hopefully they can find what's causing my aircon compressor fuse to blow. It looks to me like moisture has got into a wiring junction below the compressor . I dried it out yesterday and it worked ok for a trip down to Brisbane but blew again this morning. I will not wash down my engine again next time it will be a rag and air line job.

Well it's not water in the wiring it's the condenser fan has seized. Each time it kicks in to cool the condenser pop goes the fuse. A new complete condenser kit on the way from Melbourne should arrive by 10 am . It will need. A ragas as well so might end up with a better working aircon than I originally had ! Fingers crossed.:):)

Got the call today and it was a split turbo hose. No suprises but I'll be damned if I could see it.

Luckily didn't go into limp mode I don't know if the 2.4 is different to the 2.2 in that regards but I did reset the fault and it didn't come back after the rescue tape was applied.

Glad to hear they fixed yours Voltron.

glad it is the hose problem:eek:

you will be surprised how they fix it....

I'm really surprised a split hose stopped you. After doing a clean and degunk of all hoses, electrical plugs , leads etc , I failed to fit the clamp on the turbo-intercooler hose. I drove off next day wondering why it was so sluggish to get to speed on the M1. Suddenly hit me so I took next exit and got out a screwdriver and fitted the clamp. The hose had been blown out of alignment with the boss turning my turbo into a mobile leaf blower.....but.....I could still drive the vehicle reasonably well.

I know they are replacing it with a new hose but if they are going to just replace it with the same type of hose then that is ridiculous.

I guess I'll put in an order for silicone hoses all round. It's pathetic they just wait for peoples cars to break then replace it instead of recalling them or replacing them before they roll out the door. Even despite the fact it's a common issue reported here, I suppose I never replaced it myself because I felt it's not my responsibility to replace it and thought just maybe something has already been done about it since it so common.

Could I go so far as to claim lost accommodation that was paid for on my trip away that I didnt get to use because of this breakdown?? I doubt it, as much as I love this truck, the Toyota LC workmate is just screaming at me to buy it. And reduce the chance of never putting myself or my family in that predicament again. But it's just not the Defender and hence my emotional investment into this car will always keep me here.

Voltron, With respect to LR Assist, how did all this work. Was the guy that came out to you on the road a LandRover specific person or just an RACV type guy. You said they didn't initially take the car to a LR Dealership, so how & when did it get there? Were you held up overnight, because if you were, do LR Assist pay for your accom? Based upon your experience, how would you rate LR Assist?
Glad you got sorted anyway, Pickles.

New condensor fan fitted aircon is working better than ever for some reason . Very happy with the service from Austral motors in Brisbane they managed to fit me in without a booking and were a great help even charged up my dual battery so the fridge freezer kept running. The guy from Rover assist in Caloundra was good to arrived within the hour and cleared the error code. All up cost me nothing more than a hire car for 24 hrs . On our way South and then back over to Perth.

No surprise but the LC Workmate has issues too - rear diff and gearbox to just name 2, and its a lot more expensive to fix these 2 items on a LC compared to the LR. I looked at the Workmate and given that it would cost me 20k more, be less comfortable, less economical on fuel and dearer (would you believe!) to maintain I went the Defender. Plus 20k in the bank to cover costs???? nah - I spent the savings on optioning up........

Yeah, I don't think the TLC is a bad rig, but I think it would be a fool's errand to think it would be the problem solving solution - seems like they have quite a few issues (probably no more the most) but the owners don't talk about them much!

I had exactly same problem.
Lost power engine lights on. Computer says MAF sensors wrong. Got new sensor still the same

Eventually find out the problem was cracked intercooler. Brought a new high performance intercooler not more issues after installation. Test on highway as well.

Guys. Don’t waste time and money on the sensor. Get the intercooler out and do a inspection.
