I need to replace my air filter on my turboed 4bd1 and have been searching the forums for ideas. I like Vern's and Dougals setup but wonder if it would fit in the standard spot in a 110.
Has anyone had success out there and would like to post photos of their setup...

Got measurements for the standard setup?
I cranked out a solidworks model of the donaldson housing over the break, so I have ALL the measurements if anyone needs them.

Why the filtration system you have is fine.. (maybe its the aircon getting in the way? :P)

Have to agree with Dave. I have the standard Donaldson filtration and have not tripped the indicator yet even pushing up to 20 psi. Why change something that works ok.

If the original has been somehow murdered, are direct replacements available?

I am pretty sure the standard one is still available although I seem to remember you have to purchase as a genuine part from LR only (at inflated price). There might be some s/h ones around shortly with the number of u/s perenties coming thru the auctions.

OEM from donaldson second hand yes, new no.

the metal can has been superseeded with a plastic one not unlike the one in the image.

from what I can guess its not quite going to fit in the oem brackets as the metal straps will be a fraction too short due to the plastic housing being just a little thicker and larger in diameter than the metal can.

nothing some love with a welder, grinder and pallet banding wont be able to fix.

That was my main point with replacement. The Donaldson I've got (not yet fitted) may well be the nearest replacement for the original.

The main advantage with the newer ones is filter fitment. They slide straight in and seat/seal in one hit. No through bolt or wing-nuts etc.

yeah, till you try to do up the three clips......

I prefer the through bolt setup for this application, if you had unfettered access to the cap then the clip down ones are the ducks nuts.

Don't the stock steel cases still have the clips to hold the end cap. The plastic cases have the options of clips or twist lock.

Mines twist lock, but am thinking of going to the metal fleetgaurd one for ease of modification.

nope one long screw

put the filter in and screw it down

put the cap on and screw that down.

The OP didn't spell out his reasons.

Sometimes a crystal ball would be handy.

Perhaps it started life as a 4BD1 and the turbo was a mod. Thus the outlet from the canister was at the wrong end and maybe not converted in a suitable manner.

Col, its not hard to modify the existing air cleaner if you want to modify for turboing. I think the original intake is 65mm. I modified it to 3".

I've changed it twice. I also blocked off the duck bill drop.

G'day Doyely, how's that 110 of yours going?
I modified my cleaner when I turboed the engine but the filters are hard to find these days (ie. I haven't been able to find any). . If I can find replacements I still have to cut off the plastic cyclone piece and tape to other end...Donaldson told me they have been discontinued, so I thought I might try to find a suitable replacement instead of persisting with something that wasn't intended for a turbo...

I talked to the Donaldson rep today and he said I needed a filter that can handle 310 cfm and suggested the G090219. He calculated 310cfm as his books listed the 4BT1/T as 100kw. Anyone confirm if this kW figure is correct? $240 complete with filters. Looks like the picture posted by Dougal but is slightly bigger.

Dougal, the existing filter (N/A) housing is about 412mm long (canister only, not including outlet pipe) and 218mm dia. The filter model you pictured doesn't have the cfm capacity according to Donaldson, is it working OK for you?

Dave, I love my AC!

Yes 300CFM is the nominal airflow for a stock 4BD1T. It'll take about 500CFM to max out the original injection pump at ~4,000rpm.

Because Vern and I have rangies we're quite constrained for space compared to the 90/110/130/defender engine bay, hence the use of the smaller G08 casing which is rated to ~250CFM with the safety filter and about 300CFM without.

But the Donaldson filters are rated very conservatively for pressure drop and dust capacity. To get ~500 CFM through the G08 filter I have will put pressure drop at about 11% of atmosphere. It's a compromise I'm happy to live with.

I haven't installed my donaldson filter, I've essentially bought it a year or two early so I can plan everything else around it. But it'll massively outflow and out-filter the filter system I currently have (100 series Toyota filter inside a home-made case with 2.5" inlet and outlets).
My current system will hit it's limits when I get an intercooler setup sorted (current plan involves rejigging radiator and AC condensor to make one fit) and raise boost.

Going good mate, working hard ATM to cut noise levels (applying Bogan's sound engineering advice). Fitting air con & pto winch will be the next, they've been sitting in the workshop for too long.

I also mod the cyclone thing the same way.

I bought the last lot of filters about 6 mths ago from Qld Diesel Spares at Rocklea.

OK, I thought that might have been the case. I'm not planning on fitting a inter cooler so the same setup might suit me too. The dimensions will suit in a county.

I rand BOR today, can still get the filters from LR but they cost lots! I'll try QDS tomorrow.
Fitting AC ! We'll done, you won't regret it, despite Blknight's whinging about how soft we are!
