View Full Version : Considering wrecking Disco 1 - How would you go about it?

Hi everyone,
As the subject says, I am considering wrecking my 200tdi discovery as although it is advertised incredibly cheap ($1000) people seem to want a mint condition example, which this vehicle is not. It is probably better off for me in the long run to part it out and get rid of the rest for scrap.

My question is, how would you go about it? would you slowly pick parts off/out of it as people wanted them? or just harvest the main big items, and send the rest to the scrap yard?

I am leaning towards the latter, as then I won't have a discovery sized area of my carport that is wasted space

Put an ad on eBay or here

On EBay just sell a wheel but for a $1 and then say everything else breaking give me a call.

You would be amazed at what people want from the car. Things you think might not be worth anything , people will ask you for

If it has a blue interior I would be interested in a few bits

Just had a look at your advert and it's brown so no worries about interior stuff for me

But looking at your truck , disco's are now getting to be with more in bits than in one piece.

They make a good bush bashing trucks, or off roaders

But looking at your's I would sell the bar (should get $300) then the snorkel (should get $150)

Sell the engine but sell it with it in the car so it can be started and driven and therefore you will get more money for it. Should get $1000 or more for that.

Then just wait for everyone to ask for the rest.

last D1 I wrecked was a tdi300 with a cooked motor...

excluding the parts I flogged off I got around $500 for it for scrap metal.

If its got a couple of bits you want buy it then sell of the other parts cheap if they come and carefully remove them more if you do it for them.

Best guess...

for a not known to run tdi300 auto ID expect to be able to make in the order of $1500.

Is it still registered or at least driveable on permit?

If so I think I know someone who would be very interested in it for his wife.

I've a blue interior Reads90 if you need anything? Is a 96 v8i but I'm assuming interior pretty much the same.

Does your 96 still have the "Beautiful" Jasper Conran designed dash in the "lovely" Blue of the early D1

I thought would be the later dash.

Maybe not...I'm not sure what you're asking, but I think it's the later design same as my 97 but without the woodgrain stickers. Yup it's checked and the same, sorry dash is more grey than the old school blue.

So my wrecking is underway, my query is it easier to remove transmission first then engine or vice versa? Not much fun out in the heat though.

If it was mine I'd remove all that you can , and pull them both together ...

I suppose, have you done this? I can imagine removing radiator support inner/outer guards etc but thought gearbox/transfer would be a bit wide to pull all together. With enough brute force and stupidity anything is possible, It would be nice to get it out in one effort.

It's dead easy, remove the drive shafts, the exhaust and at least one of the engine mounting brackets off the transfer case. Cut the bonnet latch panel out (making it like the original RRCs where they unbolt) and the whole lot comes out quite easily.
