Qld rules are 1.2meters or some stupid ratio of the distance from the axle to somewhere.... can't remember I just use 1.2m. We also have a rule about forward overhang on a trailer as well, so check for that one. Obviously there is side overhang rules too, can't remember those. Shouldn't be too hard to find on your transport department's web site. Google is your friend.
Rear overhang limits for cars & trucks : VicRoads (http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/Home/Moreinfoandservices/HeavyVehicles/InformationBulletins/RearOverhangLimitsforCarsTrucks.htm)
There you go.
I guess you guys have different rules to us. How silly is our country sometimes... you'd think that sort of thing would be standard everywhere.

There are a few rules around it, it depends on the load rating of the trailer also.
I can only give info on QLD sorry, but ill share anyway.
bit of googling gives me this doco
http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/NR/rdonlyres/7A62E2C0-A7CD-4CF2-AF68-B68A4E9531BB/0/LightTrailerPack_inc_Form_0713_WEB.pdf
Appears to be the same as QLD, stated on page 3 at the bottom 3.7mtrs (at least thats how I read it)
if its a 750kg trailer the rules in this document apply
http://www.support.transport.qld.gov.au/qt/formsdat.nsf/forms/QF3970/$file/F3970_es.pdf
which states that from the center of the axle to the rear most point must not be longer than the center of the axle to the front of the trailer tub (not sure if toolbox on the draw bar counts as tub length though) and that the rear axle center to the rear most point must not exceed 3.7 meters.
I reserve the right to be wrong, that is just how i read that document combined with what I have been told :)
hope it helps.

Not sure if its me or the link, but the first link returns errors for me.
nice to know about the 1.2 mtr thing though i couldnt see in there anything about rear overhang allowed for a light trailer, only a heavy trailer. yet they show a picture of a trailer with long overhang as not okay so assuming it is also 1.2mtrs (QLD at least) i probably just missed that bit 0_0

Since there are plenty of glider trailers around with overhangs which I guess would exceed 3.7m, do they get a special dispensation ?

most of the glider trailers I see in QLD at least I wouldn't think are exceeding 3.7mtr overhang, most of them are just super long in the front which is allowable by the guidelines. but there are always exception to the laws isn't there. which makes it hard to know for sure if you are doing the right thing or not :(

bit of a bummer that, they really need to align all the road rules and regulations in this country a bit better, so much variation.

I agree completely. It's all a bit confusing and overcomplicated for my liking. Do they design these things to confuse people so that you end up doing the wrong thing by accident?

It's 'cos morons keep loading long lengths of timber/metal into 6x4's that hang many meters outside the bed of the trailer. Usually this is at the perfect height to spear through front/rear windows of other cars and stake the people inside
My car trailer often get borrow to pick up one scrappy bit of timber by mates, 'cos the only way to get a 6meter long bit of lumber home is a looonnnggg car trailer ('The bed is only 5meters long, but you also put the timer/metal down the drawbar which gives you another meter++).
Metal places in particular are VERY strict with there loading policy around here and will refuse to sell you a length of metal/purlin/pipe that won't fit on the trailer.

Metal places here are the same, I got told that I would need to supply proof that my roof rack was rated to carry more than 30kgs to get a load of steel I wanted.... they are heavy duty Rhino-racks good for 75kgs. But still needed to produce the paperwork.

Yep, can't have anything hanging out the back. Here's a chart from Vicroads showing what is allowed and what isn't.

You can have an overhang of 1.2 metres over the front of your car though, so you could stick it on our rook rack legally.

Not happy
Every one I know with 12 foot duck punts use them as trailers toppers.
I see camper trailers all the time with there punt or v bottom on top.
A lot of camper trailers even have boat racks so I cant under stand it.
Not liking the idea of putting the boat on top of the defender, 1 paying big money for roof rack , 2 trying to get it on and off the roof by myself.
Are there any good set ups for this ? See trade trailers with racks and over hang all the time. :censored:

I'd probably just let something like a duck punt overhang and ignore the laws (yes I know, I a really bad person  ). You see the rulings will exist to stop the morons that insist on carrying dangerous thing like timber and metal outside the trailer. I imagine something "soft" that's big and not a danger to road users like a duck punt would be ignored by police   You see if someone runs into the back of you it'll just fold up, so be quite safe. It weighs nothing so will not upset the balance of the trailer and make it pitch end to end either.

No idea, it is dumb, but as DC suggested, it was probably done to stop people bringing home 5 metre lengths of timber from Bunnings in their 6x4 trailers.
