Hi all

I am about to attempt to fit a GPS/reverse camera system to my D3 in the cubby hole. I will be using the D4 GPS surround part as seen at DISCO3.CO.UK - View topic - Integrated Aftermarket Nav in D3 using D4 GS Surround (http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic62936.html) and a Garmin Dezl 560LT. I chose this GPS as it looks to be the right screen size to cover the hole, it will turn on and off with the cars ignition and it has capability for a reverse camera. While it was designed for trucks it also has an automotive mode.

I was wondering if anyone has done this method here and how the D4 GPS surround part stay secure in the cubby hole? I have read the disco3 thread and seen other people using this method successfully so it should be able to work.

Also can anyone recommend me a reverse camera for the D3. I saw some on ebay however I’m not sure if they are any good.

Finally, can anyone see any flaws in my plan?

Thank you in advance,

Nick

Do you know that you can buy a unit that will fit in the D3 hole & it looks factory.

From memory Freeway car audio in Malvern Victoria have pictures on their website.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I havnt seen the Freeway car audio one however I have seen the Chinese ones on ebay. I decided not to go with those ones due to the cost and the unknown quality.

The Garmin GPS with surround and camera should be under $450 whereas the integrated systems start from $800ish and can go into the thousands. I have also seen other use a pioneer screen however that requires cutting the cubby hole which I am not prepared to do.

Hi Nick,

Just wondering how did you go with installing GPS/reverse camera system to your D3 cubby hole? What GPS and reverse camera you end up using and is the GPS holding up with the D4 GS surround? Where did you procured the D4 GS surround?

AUTOBARN fella tried to sell me $1000 Pioneer head unit (with GPS, bluetooth, etc) plus a reverse camera ($80) plus installation costing me all up around $1500 bucks :mad:

But I am thinking along the same line as you by covering my D3 cubby hole with GPS/reverse camera (all in one) and replacing the original radio with after market 2 DIN stereo unit (basic one with bluetooth and USB / AUX input!). By doing this not only I will have a decent stereo to play in car and GPS/reverse camera capability but also cover the eye-soaring:eek: (IMO!!) cubby hole and also may save some $$ at the same time!!

So do you please have photos/instructions or any suggestions/comments to share?

Thanks in advance!

Regards,
AG

Hi

I did go through with it and it works great. I used the Garmin Dezl 560LT which I bought from Johnny Appleseed GPS (no affiliation). I went with this one as it has the reverse camera, will auto switch on and off with the ignition and can be used in car mode despite being a truck GPS.
Garmin dezl 560LT Truck GPS (http://www.ja-gps.com.au/Garmin/dezl-560lt-truck-gps/)

The GPS surround was ordered through AUSTRAL landrover and from memory it was about $50.

The reverse camera was just a cheap one from ebay which fits into the number plate light. It works well enough however because of the number plate light it shining next to the lens it doesn't work very well at night.

I just followed the steps on the DISCO3.co.uk link above and it works fine. Instead of Mechano I just took the whole set up to bunnings and found some brackets and screws to fit it (did it in the shop after cutting the GPS surround to make sure it worked). After that just pull the dash apart and fit the surround and fit the camera. It was a but fidley to make sure the screen was in the right position but wasn't too difficult. The surround is just a friction fit (so no glue/other adhesive). It has been through a few 4wd trips with no issue coming loose.

All up it was about $450 ($370 GPS, $50 GPS Surround, $30 camera) but it looks like the GPS is even cheaper now so could be done for less.

I cant advise you on the Pioneer head unit however from what I have read, depending on which factory system you have, it may be quite complicated. No disrepect to AUTOBARN employees however I would seek advice from a car audio specialist if you are going down that line.

I haven't got any photos however there are plenty on this link DISCO3.CO.UK - View topic - Integrated Aftermarket Nav in D3 using D4 GS Surround (http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic62936.html)

With the camera install, there is a great pdf that another member here put together that I used.

Good luck and let us know which way you end up going. Happy to answer any other questions you have.

Thanks Nick. I will post when I install GPS/Camera but may take my time as some other priorities to be finished first!
