View Full Version : What is the BEST car you have ever driven?

As a yin yang thing to the 'worst car' thread...
What's the best car you've driven - and why?
For me an XB Falcon Ute. It was my "You Beaut, blue ute" It was heavy, versatile, solid, reliable, and FUN. And it was my first car. Could lie on the bonnet and lean against the screen - built like a brick shedhouse so no dents etc. Or could watch the cricket at Uni backing up to the boundary and sitting on an old couch in the back....
Bench seat for the drive in. Essentially it was FREEDOM.
And I did really enjoy driving it... unlike the Datsun 180B I had subsequently but that's more for that other thread... :lol2:

I'm not biased at all ... and don't have rose colour glasses
But defianatley the best car I've driven is my Citroen CX2500 GTi Turbo
You know ... every trip is an adventure. The "unscheduled stops" are half the fun :wasntme: Not so much liked by the boss women though :(

With my old bones and my wife's arthritis the current D4 is it.
She can step up into it and the ride is very comfortable.
I have just had a little more padding on the drivers seat to help the old hamstring injury.
Remembering it is a 4x4 and not a sports car I love the power, ride and handling.

I've got a few;
Lexus IS-F - beautifully built, fast, sounded amazing and the 8spd auto with paddles was excellent
D4/RRS - no need to explain on this forum
Aston V8 Vantage - just because it sounded fantastic. Was a pile of crap otherwise :o Nearly had it impounded which wouldn't have been good because it wasn't mine, but that's another story...
R33 GT-R - owned one for five years back when they were the current model and it was a rocket ship. Unfortunately they are just ricer cars now and I cringe every time I see one. It makes me feel sad.
R35 GT-R - can't be described properly using words.
Chrysler 300C SRT-8 - Not a huge fan of the look, but it was a special car to drive. Awesome engine, beautiful solid car. Big...just as they all were once upon a time.
HK Monaro - First car and was only a 6. Was in as new condition but like all old Holdens it was a POS. But I loved it anyway. Wished I still had it. I can still smell it's interior and when I think about it I get that first-car glow washing over me all over again.
Defender 300TDi - what can I say. Going slow has never been so much fun :D Coolest car in the world according to Top Gear and apparently Portia DeRossi. The only car I've owned that I could never sell.

I have to admit to having a few -
Nissan GTR R32... Never owned one but drove one.
Audi R8 - again, never owned one but drove one.
Suzuki Cappuccino - great little car, especially once modified.. :wasntme:

My brother had this model but his was 4x4 and I was not a fan.

My R34 GTR had 470kw at the wheels. I find no car off the showroom floor very fast anymore, unless it's an R35 GTR. As stated earlier, seeing them now as bogun cars makes me cringe and sad also. My friend has a C63 Black which is quite a beast of a car.
I enjoy my wifes BMW X6, its big and low and handles amazingly for a +2tonne car. Has no puprose other then being big, comfortable and safe, what more do you would want for a female driver and your children.
The Defender has redifined for me what driving is all about. Slowing down and enjoying the moment. I dont enjoy being low to the ground and going fast anymore.
Defender for the win.

In terms of cars I've owned and most enjoyed driving
Lancia Delta Integrale evo 1 (400bhp/1100kg 4wd) - Brutally fast, and amazing feedback for a 4wd car.
Caterham superlight R (267bhp - 505kg - 10500 rpm 2 litre) Fastest car I have ever driven. 0-100kmh in 2.69 seconds in first gear. 0-160kmh in 6 seconds in second
Peugeot 205 1.9 GTI - huge lift off oversteer at any speed. Probably my favourite old shcool hot hatch ever. Would have another one now. Had 3 over the years and loved them all.
maybe we should put up pics!

For sentimental reasons , the first car I bought. A 1975 Chev Monza with the 4.3 V8. Not the most powerful or quickest car of its time but absolutely terrifying on wet roads or worse snow , as it was so easy to break traction. Second place would be the late and still missed Disco Tdi. It did what was asked of it without question but unfortunately died of cancer. Still debating if the TD5 will make the grade , but time will tell.

I have not driven any flash cars. I did very much enjoy my mothers VR6 Golf when I was younger. Got my worst speeding ticket in that car. Very solid, quiet and handled great for front wheel drive.
I do have a soft spot for my old 81 2 door RRC. There just isnt anything else like them. Mine was stock height on stock 205r16s. Great ride on and off road.

I have not driven very many cars, considering how long I have been driving - from memory, may have missed a few, not including trucks:- 1923 Ford T, 1921 Reo, 1931 Swift, 1935 Vauxhall, 1934 Ford V8, 1948 Austin 16, Austin A30, Bullnose Morris Cowley, Landrover Series 1,2,2a,3 4cyl petrol, Landrover 2a, 3, 110, Defender Tdi diesel, Citroen 1D19 Safari, DSpeciale, Dyane, Simca Vedette, Simca Aronde, Peugot 403, VW Rabbit diesel, Transporter, Beetle, Ford Mustang, Toyota Camry, Landcruiser FJ45V, FJ45, FJ40, Holden EK, Commodore, Astra, Camira, Nissan Maxima, Hino Contessa, Ford Laser (several models), Ford TX5, Falcon (several models), Custom V8, Hillman Minx, Morris 1500, Mazda 323.
Of these, I would have to pick the DSpeciale. All the performance and handling you could want, trouble-free and durable. As with all D series, steers straight with hands off, and superb brakes - with the brake pedal closer to the floor than the accelerator, and no travel at all on the pedal. Drawbacks - no aircon on my model, noisy, most economical speed above the speed limit, very long wheelbase means you need to exercise care in close quarters, and the tapering body makes backing 'interesting'.

Hmm...
My mates Saab 9-3 Turbo was superb. Handled wonderfully, plenty of poke, beautiful stereo, comfortable like nothing else.
But it has to be my D2. I can sit in it for hours and not feel uncomfortable, great stereo, handles fantastically despite not having ACE, takes me wherever I want to go (except undercover car parks :p ) and it's just fun

Would have to say my dad's CLK Merc, only the 320 V6 but a smooth quiet and quick car with looks to match - i would love an AMG 550 version or even 6.3.
The most fun to drive was my mums brand new Renault Fuego coupe, a week after getting my license mum younger brothers and myself drove to Byron Bay in it.
Handled great thru the hills at 160kph when mum fell asleep and so frugal that we barely used $100 in fuel over the 2 week trip.

The old Aussie built ID19 ... I have two 1963 models on club permits. Not fast, but gee's I have a bloody ball floating around in them.... The trick is to fun one that's not rusted away. I'm tidying up an ugly pink one at the moment ... I've had it's roof off the last couple of months driving it around "convertible style" just for the hell of it LOL
Is this the best project car you have ever seen? (http://www.aussiefrogs.com/forum/citro%EBn-forum/90325-best-project-car-you-have-ever-seen.html)
You can get them with (typically not great 70's style) air conditioning. My old man is restoring a 1975 DS23 injected 5spd pallas with the twin condesor A/C. Google center point steering if you want to know why they drive arrow straight. You can completely lose a front wheel at speed and still do a crash stop and they will pull up dead straight without pulling at the steering

My old Citroen DS 21, new nose, old dash (for the initiated among us...) wins hands down and will forever, I think... Sadly had to sell it when moving from NZ to Australia, but it will always have a special place in my memories. Lots of comfort, amazing road holding, just like the favourite armchair at home. Only drawback was the lack of air conditioning, but it was NZ after all... Cheers, Erik

My Skoda Yeti 103Tdi with DSG.
It's not so expensive that I have to worry about it too much. I can drive it and use it within reason.
It's comfortable but handles nicely.
I had a 2005 WRX and while the WRX would blast away in gear, but I never really smashed it through the gears and that is something you need to do with a WRX to get the most out of them. I have read many times about how the magazine reporters would just dump the clutch at redline to get the posted 0 - 100 times. The Yeti with the DSG changes so quick, I think it would beat the WRX to at least 80km/h with the way I drove the WRX most of the time and the Yeti will do it every time without harm.
I can fit everything I need for my family of 4 in the car. Everything else, I dont really need it and the space limit gives me an excuse for the wife.
It's awesome on fuel.
I can take it a little bit off road.
It just does everything so well.
Happy Days.

Like a few others here, I've got several 'bests'.
For Sheer lunatic, grin on the face, rear end sliding fun, the 'most fun' award goes to a 2 litre turbo Robin Hood (Lotus 7 clone half the weight of an old mini). The half hour drive I had convinced to build one myself, and I got as far as rebuilding an old Ford Essex V6 engine and gearbox to go in one.
The 'ah, if only' award would go to an Audi A8 4.2 V8 Quattro that I had for a short time as a demonstrator when VW were trying to win our fleet business at work.
Best I've owned would be a two way tie between a Volvo S60 T5 I sold before leaving the UK, and the Mercedes ML320 that's about to be replaced by the D3.

1958 Wolseley 1500 because it was my first car. It was 32yrs old when I bought it in 1990 and had been painted a horrible bright yellow. It wasn't fast, powerful or anything like that but I had a lot of fun driving and because of the stage of life that feeling of freedom.
I had to sell it when my second child was born because of an issue getting 2 baby seats in the back with 1 seat wide lap sash seat belt. My dad bought it, finished the restoration job I had started and sold it a few years later to a musician who wrote it off when someone crashed into the back off them.
I'm hoping that when I get the Deefer in a few months that I will have a different response to this thread.

Unfortunately it wasn't mine, belonged to a friend. I couldn't afford it even back then. But the one I should have kept was a '73 XA Fairmont Superbird hardtop optioned out with 351, top loader, slippery diff, rallypack, 12 slotters, bonnet stripes etc. Even had an 8 track stereo. Cost me about $5500 back then. I had to sell it when the family grew. I can only imagine what it would be worth now:(

I'm not a huge VW fan, but oddly I have a soft spot for Skodas. They seem to be better built VWs :D Every Skoda I've driven has just felt right, well balanced, solid and lots of fun.
I got to the thrash a few different Octavia RSs around the old Top Gear Oz test track out of Sydney and they (both petrol and diesel) were a lot of fun.
The Yeti is a very well designed car and very capable. A chap I know was on the national launch for the current model and they flogged them up in the centre of Oz over outback roads and sand dunes. They left the Amarok support vehicles for dead (not a huge feat but you get the picture). Impressed a lot of people.
I'd happily own one. Perhaps the only thing that puts me off is the DSG and how well it would behave out of warranty I wouldn't want to be paying to replace one:mad: Seems VW has a few issues in that and other areas.

Best car I have driven & owned would have to be 1990 BMW M3 (E30). Not a super fast car (0-100Kph 6.7sec Top speed 240kph) but handle like a dream, it was a race car first (Lefthand drive only, dogleg gearbox, fat wheel arches, big areodynamic rear wing) and road car second. I loved that car
Best one I've driven, but not owned, would be 1989 Alpina B10 Bi-Turbo, based on a BMW 535i (E34). Super smooth engine, suspension that was comfortable and sporty. 5.6sec to 100kph, top speed 290kph, room for 5 adults plus a decent boot.
I might have seen 270kph on the speedo once :wasntme:

I wouldn't own a Ferrari, they are fun to drive and ride in when they are owned by someone else though.
Best I've owned is the D4 V8, so smooth, quiet and comfortable on-road yet extremely capable off. It goes OK for a 2.6 tonne 4WD as well.

I'm very much a man who loves bits of machinery because they are brilliant at what they were designed to do ... hence Land Rovers! :D 'Best' is hard to pick because I've driven different cars that were great for different reasons. I suppose the one that sticks in my mind is a 1911 Model T. Despite the fact it is more basic than a prison cell, and the fact the controls aren't really designed for people with two arms and two legs it was brilliant because it reminds you what motoring is about in its purest form :BigThumb: I've never had so much fun in my life ...
... even though I conked out in the middle of town  luckily I didn't hold up traffic but I had an audience watching me bail out and crank it over again :D the owners words of advice didn't really fill me with confidence "don't worry, it happens a lot on warm days" :D
It's all traumatic at the time but it reminds you how far the auto industry has come in a relatively short amount of time. Plus the whole production line thing with the Model T revolutionised the world ... this one being an early brass car was special when I think of the bigger picture :)

I love them I wish I never had sold the dual cab, the single cab was great but was a little annoying when it came to travelling with people.
When I was in the market for my first registered car, I test drove holden cruze awd, mazda 323, mitsubishi lancer, for focus and then came the hilux as soon as I got in I feel in love.
It was so easy to drive the gears were great. It was comfortable and had quite a bit of power when the right foot went down.
Never had any issues with it and drove half way around Australia (mostly tar road as it was 2wd , but did take it through some national parks and went great).
I wish I could get one again but they all have too many kms for what I am after.

Thanks VladTepes for starting this thread. I have been thinking about this since starting the worst car. I have a few that I have really liked. I will start with the car that gave me the most feedback andy made me really feel like a driver - Datsun 1200. I have owned a lot of cars. My RX4 was fun (Everyone should drive a Rotary once), but not great. Subaru RS Turbo was a great car (Only car I never lost money on). My 200SX was fun to drift. The quickest car I have driven would be the FPV F6. Loved it. The car that I look forward to driving to work every day(And taking off road)- Defender 90. The most practical/sensible car(But Boring) - Wife's Mazda 3. Best all-round car - D4. (I have just contacted my leasing Company for a quote)

Best I've driven is an early l322, followed by the Pug 206, then my first car, a Rover 82 coupe (sd2). With the motor on 18DBTDC the bonnet would lift at 200kph to take off again!
Although, maybe the best car I will ever drive will be the L405......
The first car I bought was a Wolsely 24/80. The stock agents in S.A. used them in the 60's and said they'll sit on 100mph all day. My grandpa took them from Mundalla to Adelaide in the Chev (impala I think) and sat on 120mph all the way.

Best car I've ever driven in the L322. The most fun and the biggest smile I get is when driving my 101.:)

My 1953 Ferrari 212 Export was a real hoot whilst it was going. Required 8 days maintenance for 2 days driving though. The 1959 Corvette, much modified 327, Saginaw 4 speed, cerametallic brakes, was absolutely lightning fast and stone reliable. My all time favourite was the 1970 Dodge Challenger convertible, Hemi 426, 4 speed. I was never brave enough to take it anywhere near its top speed. Got married and swmbo wanted furniture, white goods, etc. No money then so the Dodge had to go. Sold in 1975 for $5,000. They now sell for near $500,000, weep, cry, moan.

My best car was my XY GTho fase3 power was great loved that car drank enough fuel to power a small nation sold it and brought a HZ Holden and put a worked 427 chev in it great car to.
Brand spanking new Falcon XY GTHO back in '72. It was unbelievable.
Have to agree. I had an XW Phase II back in the day - it was an awesome car to own / drive.
Lately - best fun has been in son's RX7 (but I only ever get to travel in the passenger's seat :p). If anything, it goes even harder than the GT did, and would out-handle it any day of the week.
Best offroad fun vehicle was my RRC 2 door - nothing any of my mates had at the time would come near it.
These days, with older bones to think about and while I still like travelling a lot with the occasional venture off the black stuff - I love driving the D4. :D

The highest performance (and price) was the V10 Touraeq I frequently have blats in, not really my cup of tea though. A mate's worked XB Falcon auto, yellow with racing stripes was okay, but just felt stupid to drive.
A Saab 900 paddock basher was a bit crazy but any paddock basher is fun.
The Liebherr 754 felt awesome, just wanted to go on a 6km/h rampage through the rubbish tip, but alas the sales rep was instructing...
The most enjoyable (for the first 20 minutes at least) was definitely the little Massey Ferguson with slasher, did half a paddock before I handed it back.
My County and a decent state forest or NP is my idea of utopian driving...

Well, apart from my Defender of course
Similar to Vlad, I had an XF ute 4.1 litre. It started out as a 3 on the tree manual armstrong steering, and vinyl bench seat. I put a T5 5 speed in it, and EB Fairmont seats and console, and LSD, but kept the armstrong steering. I drove it everywhere for 9 years, I even did the Gibb River road in it. Had 550,000 km's on it when I sold it to buy my BA ute. Unfortunately they don't make them like they used too.
My dad had a Liberty 4wd wagon when they first came out early 90's; it had air suspension, you could raise it by 70mm I think up to 80km/h when it lowered automatically. (Why they dropped this feature on the later models, I don't know?) It was a really good car, handled like it was on rails, and loved dirt roads.
I've driven my mates Jag a few times, (late 90's model) thats very nice :)
And another mate used to own an original RRC 2 door, 4 speed manual with electric overdrive. That was very good also :)

For my two bobs worth
Best car is my current L322 TD6. Just so beautiful to drive.
Holden HK GTS 327 Bathurst Monaro. Awesome , What more can I say other than wish I still had it.
Holden Overlander. Still in the shed after 30 years. Love it.
'67 Mini 1000 Deluxe. First car. Just so much fun to drive. Not all that fast but what an adventure.
Mate's turbo charged SLR5000. Super super super quick. F........Q . Could light up the wheels in 3rd gear at 80 mph ++
Lada Niva 4x4. Far better than most people give it credit for. Would I buy one again, YES.

Try a day out at the 6th Gear Experience at the ProDrive testing track if you are ever near Kenilworth in the UK.
Ferrari 360 Modena was the best handling car I drove, Audi R8 V10 the best sounding engine, and the Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 put the biggest smile on my face.
Consequently now the three best cars that I have ever driven !

ok i will post pics of mine! Just because I can! In a way its a good thing that they have all gone, as I spent an extraordinary amount of money on the first 2. I do miss the Lancia a lot though.

Horses for courses I reckon.
Mooching along rough bush tracks ....its hard to beat the defender tdi.
Taking a long drive on country roads ....a Rangie Sport TDV8 is hard to beat
Going for a blast around the twisty bits .....my Renault Megane Sport is great fun
Playing about in some rough gullies ....a series 1 with the roof off and windscreen down puts a smile on your dial
Doing odd jobs around the farm driving.... the little red fergie is the weapon of choice

Hi
It has to be my 1999 P38, the last Range Rover with a chassis and the Rover V8, a true beast :p
One of the best cars I ever owned was another Spen King design, the P6, in my case the Rover 2000.
Inboard rear discs, de-dion rear suspension and an incredible cross linked front suspension. I put a set of Konis on it with Mags and Avon radials, it went round corners like it was on rails.
I never owned a 3500 but I have driven a couple.
Had a lot of fun with old aircooled VWs as well, some of them went pretty fast, but were not so good at stopping :o
